Bavarian Weizens are not generally light in body. With their high protein and yeast content, they tend to be quite full, actually, as the AHA guidelines state (med to full). 2. Bavarian Weizens are NOT tart. Damn the person who origianally wrote this into the old AHA guidelines (they must not have noticed the lemon wedge in their glass). There is no sourness in a properly made Weizen, and only Saccharomyces cerevisiae is used in its fermentation. 3. Berliner Weisse CAN have Brettanomyces character. The recent Brewing Techniques article about Berliner Weisse is sorely lacking in good taste info because the author has never even tasted the world's best example of the style: Schultheiss. Berliner Kindl pales next to the complex, sour, fruity-earthy-Bretty characters of Schultheiss. An idea was put forward to me by one of the judges at the BoB 2 this past weekend, and since I was also thinking the same thing, I'll mention it here: There should be a separate category for sour beers like Lambic and Berliner Weisse and Belgian reds, etc. Why Berliner Weisse should be competing against Bavarian Weizen is beyond logic; the two beers have much less in common than Lambic and Berliner Weisse. Have fun! George de Piro (Nyack, NY) --Next_Part_SYNC930565E05--
