Ken Jucks ________________________ The Masters Championship of Amateur Brewing Steering Committee is pleased to announce the list of Qualifying Styles and an updated list of Qualifying Events for the second MCAB, which will be held in 2000 in St. Louis and hosted by the St. Louis Brews. As detailed in the following list, there will again be 18 Qualifying Styles. Some of the styles are the same as for MCAB I (usually the most popular or competitive styles); others are "rotations" to other substyles within the same BJCP category. In a few instances we have opted to go with "broader" categories, especially in styles that have been less competitive. The BJCP has advised us that the numbering and descriptions for these categories may change somewhat when the new BJCP style guide is released later this year. So, without further ado, the QS's for MCAB II are: (1) Classic American / Pre-Prohibition (BJCP 1(D)). (2) Czech / Bohemian Pilsner (BJCP 2(A)). (3) Kolsch (BJCP 3(D)). (4) Strong Bitter (BJCP 4(C)). (5) Scotch & Scottish Ales (BJCP 5 (all substyles) & 11(B) (Strong Scotch Ale)) (6) APA (BJCP 6(B)) (7) California Common / Steam Beer (BJCP 6(C)). (8) IPA (BJCP 7) (9) Vienna (BJCP 9(B)) (10) American Brown (BJCP 10(D)) (11) Barleywine (BJCP 11(D)) (12) Imperial Stout (BJCP 11(C)) (13) European Dark Lager (BJCP 12 (all substyles)) (14) Hellesbock/Maibock (BJCP 13(B)) (15) Robust Porter (BJCP 14(A) (16) Sweet Stout (BJCP 15(A)) (17) Strong Belgian & French Ales (BJCP 17 (all substyles)). (18) Lambic (BJCP 18(B)) So, start your brew kettles!! Additionally, the following competitions are hereby invited to be Qualifying Events for MCAB II. (Some of them (marked with an "*") were announced previously and have accepted the MCAB's invitation.) Some of these competitions are repeating QE's, others are "rotations" between major contests in an area. We are still considering inviting another one or two QE's, and will announce any additions later. The QE's for MCAB II are: (1) Kansas City Brewmeisters Competition (February 1999)* (2) Boston Homebrew Competition (February 1999)* (3) Reggale and Dredhop (Boulder, Colorado -- February 1999) * (4) World Cup of Beer (California -- March 1999) * (5) Sunshine Challenge (Orlando -- May 1999). (6) BUZZ Boneyard Brewoff (Illinois - June 1999) (7) BUZZ-Off (Philadelphia - June 1999). (8) BURP Spirit of Free Beer (Virginia - June 1999). (9) Dixie Cup (Houston -- October 1999). (10) Oregon Homebrew Festival (Oregon -- date tba) (11) Canadian Masters (location and date tba) --Next_Part_SYNC84895E893 Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Return-Path: Received: from postoffice.harvard.net by synchro.com with POP3 (Mailtraq/1.0.3.1018) id SYNC84735E794; Tue, 26 Jan 1999 09:31:13 -0500 Received: (from root at localhost) by airsupply.harvard.net (8.8.8/8.8.7) id JAA09870 for postmaster at synchro.com; Tue, 26 Jan 1999 09:29:04 -0500 (EST) Received: from arl-img-7.compuserve.com (arl-img-7.compuserve.com [149.174.217.137]) by airsupply.harvard.net (8.8.8/8.8.7) with ESMTP id JAA09697 for ; Tue, 26 Jan 1999 09:28:12 -0500 (EST) Received: (from root at localhost) by arl-img-7.compuserve.com (8.8.6/8.8.6/2.17) id JAA25863 for judge at synchro.com; Tue, 26 Jan 1999 09:29:06 -0500 (EST) Date: Tue, 26 Jan 1999 09:28:48 -0500 From: "Nathaniel P. " A question for Ed Westemeier . Why haven't we seen notice of the annual meeting in the BJCP Reporter? Again from the bylaws: "The minutes of all board meetings and business, with the exception of personnel matters, shall be available for inspection by any Regular Member. The Secretary shall cause them to be published in The BJCP Reporter in a timely manner." Another question for Ed. Why haven't we seen the minutes of the board in the BJCP Reporter? More bylaws: "The Treasurer shall cause the preparation and presentation of semiannual reports to the Board of Directors in conjunction with the informational tax and asset reports, and will cause such reports to be appropriately published..... " Should those financial statements have been published in the BJCP Reporter? I think so, and if so we need at least two issues of the BJCP Reporter a year at minimum. Ed says: "Another point to consider is the fact that we've printed every single piece ever submitted by any BJCP member. Perhaps that could be taken as a hint that if we received more submissions, we'd publish more frequently" Ed how is it that so many of the homebrew clubs though-out the country can manage to print a news letter each month and you as editor of the BJCP Reporter can only find enough material for one issue in a year? With around 2,200 members of which a number of them are published authors in the brewing publications, you haven't been able to acquire enough material for quarterly issues of the BJCP Reporter. Why is this? We had a new scoresheet put into use recently. Why were we not informed in the Reporter of this new development and why the scoresheet was changed? It has been alluded to that there is a committee working on the style guidelines. Why isn't some of that discussion presented in the Reporter? As to the cost, Ed are you saying that the membership isn't worth the cost of sending out the Reporter? I honestly believe that the publication of the Reporter in a timely fashion quarterly would be cost effective to the BJCP as it would maintain and increase the interest in the organization. I was on a BJCP mead scoresheet and guidelines committee in 96 and 97, and we made extensive revisions to the mead scoresheet. That scoresheet, which was the result of lots of committee discussion, is the one that would be best for you to get. Unfortunately, I can't find it on the BJCP site, and I apparently never saved a copy myself. I also can't find it on the temporary page that Tom Fitzpatrick had set up at the time. The best thing, of course, would be to find someone that has that scoresheet. In lieu of that, you can access a mead scoresheet that I made up myself on the Atom Masher's Goodies Page at: http://hbd.org/users/atommash/goodies.html in PostScript, PDF and LaTeX source. This scoresheet was what we started with on the committee, before we went through all the discussion. The real question, though, is what happened to the scoresheet from the committee? -Mike ============================================================================ Michael L.
