In addition, two of the events (Clear Lake Pub Crawl on Saturday afternon and George De Piro's Sensory Evaluation Seminar) will by necessity have to be on a limited seating basis (about 43 for the Clear Lake Pub Crawl and 80 for the sensory evaluation seminar), which we may be able to expand if we know in advance the number of people who want to participate in these events. Finally, a number of the speakers have requested an approximate head count so they can have printed materials prepared. (There will be a nominal charge for bus passes for the pub crawls (probably about $5) and for a food ticket for the final bash (probably $5-10). Final pricing will be announced when we have gotten all the remaining sponsors lined up and committed.) Ergo, if you're planning to attend the MCAB -- especially if you're from out of town -- please drop me an e-mail with the following information: Name of attendee Address, telephone, e-mail Brew Club Affiliation Plans to Attend (list events you want to attend): Friday evening Pub Crawl (Houston Village Area) Friday night George Fix / Paul Farnsworth beer tasting Saturday morning technical conference Saturday afternoon technical conference Saturday afternoon Pub Crawl (Clear Lake area) Saturday afternoon Sensory evaluation seminar (note: the Saturday afternoon pub crawl and the Sensory Evaluation Seminar are at the same time) Saturday evening party Additionally, if you are a National Judge and want to be put on the list of candidates for the remaining panel slots, please indicate this as well. (Master judges who have not already done so should contact me directly to reserve their desired panel assignments.) Judges -- even if they have reserved their panel assignments -- will all need to check in at the judge check in table at the hotel on Friday evening (by 7 PM) and Saturday morning (by 11 AM). Finally, please indicate the time/date and airport you will be flying in to. We *may* be able to either have a few scheduled airport pickups or help coordinate ground transportation with other MCAB attendees. (If we're able to do so, I'll contact you directly -- but please assume that you'll have to arrange your own ground transportation!) As always, please feel free to write me with questions. Louis K. This is a fact; I talked close to 7 times to Brian at the AHA in regards to these comps and all I get is empty promises. The last time he said he had the comp report in his hand. I explained that the lag had put me in "inactive" status, he said "golly that's awful, I didn't know, it will go out right away." Well that was before Xmas and it still hasn't gone out yet so I must assume that Brian is a liar and the AHA doesn't give a shit about the BJCP judges. --Next_Part_SYNC83695D8BF Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Return-Path: Received: from postoffice.harvard.net by synchro.com with POP3 (Mailtraq/1.0.3.1018) id SYNC83315D6E5; Wed, 20 Jan 1999 11:37:08 -0500 >From root Wed Jan 20 11:35:10 1999 Received: (from root at localhost) by airsupply.harvard.net (8.8.8/8.8.7) id LAA08907 for postmaster at synchro.com; Wed, 20 Jan 1999 11:35:10 -0500 (EST) Received: from mailhost.lanl.gov (mailhost.lanl.gov [128.165.3.12]) by airsupply.harvard.net (8.8.8/8.8.7) with ESMTP id LAA08813 for ; Wed, 20 Jan 1999 11:34:50 -0500 (EST) Received: from t4.lanl.gov (t4.lanl.gov [128.165.124.150]) by mailhost.lanl.gov (8.9.2/8.9.2/(cic-5, 1/3/99)) with ESMTP id JAA28572; Wed, 20 Jan 1999 09:36:03 -0700 (MST) Received: from atom.lanl.gov (atom.lanl.gov [128.165.124.151]) by t4.lanl.gov (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id JAA02012; Wed, 20 Jan 1999 09:36:02 -0700 (MST) Received: (from srb at localhost) by atom.lanl.gov (8.8.5/8.8.5) id JAA18282; Wed, 20 Jan 1999 09:36:03 -0700 (MST) From: Scott Bickham Reply-To: "JudgeNet - the beer judge digest" Errors-To: judge-owner at synchro.com Sender: judge at synchro.com Message-Id: <199901201636.JAA18282 at atom.lanl.gov> Subject: BJCP exam and competition schedule To: JudgeNet - the beer judge digest Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 09:36:02 -0700 (MST) Cc: editor at brewtech.com (Deb Jolda) In-Reply-To: from "JudgeNet - the beer judge digest" at Jan 20, 99 01:02:41 am X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4 PL24] Content-Type: text Apparently-To: judge at synchro.com X-Hops: 3 X-POST-MessageClass: 10; Mailing List Message The exam and competition schedules have just been updated on the BJCP web page, but here they are for your convenience. Depending on how many entries and judges we get, we may judge some of the smaller categories on Friday evening, March 5. Last year we had 300 entries and 47 judges, and hope for about the same this time. And as Peter Zien mentioned last week, we are especially interested in finding judges who can help us judge our special category - Ancient, Medieval, and Indigenous Beers. For those of you in the east and midwest looking for relief, our snowfall has been minimal here (none in 20 years). :-) You can register online at www.softbrew.com/afchbc, or by sending me an e-mail or snail-mail. Greg Lorton AFCHBC Organizer/Quality Ale & Fermentation Fraternity (QUAFF) 2602 La Duela Lane Carlsbad, CA 92009 glorton at cts.com (760) 635-0528 On the subject of recording BJCP points through AHA sanctioned competitions, the AHA and the BJCP both make it clear that the report that includes credit for judges should go to the BJCP. The AHA cover letter in their sanctioned competition program kit says to send the list of judges directly to the BJCP, as well as their Organizer Report Form. Also, when the BJCP is notified by the AHA of a competition, the BJCP sends its own package, including list of judges, mailing labels, organizer report form, etc. The BJCP cover letter states (in bold letters) to send the Organizer's Report Form directly to the BJCP. A preaddressed envelope to the BJCP (c/o Russ Wigglesworth) is included in that package. All of that aside, I would guess (emphasis on the word "guess") that the main reason that some judges may be overdue in being recognized for judge points and receiving promotions is that there is a backlog in the BJCP getting the judge points into the system. In my own case, I believe that my status in the BJCP is based on records that are about a year old. I should have accumulated enough points to advance from recognized to certified last March when I sent in last year's AFCHBC organizer report. However, when I received the list of judges from the BJCP for this year's AFCHBC, I was still listed as recognized. It seems that promotions are done once a year, based on experience points accumulated through February of that year. If experience points are missing from competitions older than that, I would check with the competition organizer (as RBoland recommended yesterday).
