Fix and Farnsworth will be hosting a Friday night tasting . . . be there! In the interests of transparency, here's where we stand on the various judging issues regarding the MCAB . . . . After considerable thought and careful consideration, we have decided to go with three judges per panel. Virtually of all the master judges surveyed considered five judges to be far too many, and most (but not all) considered four also be too many. Many also objected to four as creating the potential of deadlocked panels. So, although we recognize that reasonable minds can differ, we have decided that the way to have the highest possible quality of judging is to go with a panels of three, and make the panels as strong as we possibly can. And as we've said before, we're giving preference to BJCP Master Judges in this regard . . . . So, assuming that we don't have 27 Master judges at the MCAB, how are we gonna pick who else to put on the panels? We have decided, as I have said previously, there will be a limited number of "non-Master master judges" who will be seated -- people whose credentials are such that nobody can seriously object to their being treated as a master judge in terms of preference. At present, we are extending such courtesies to Paul Farnsworth (National Judge; noted brewing consultant; professor of fermentation science at UTSA; etc., etc., etc.), George Fix (no comments needed, although George has indicated that he may decline to judge because he is qualified in several styles), and Jeff Renner (based on his extensive research and writing on Pre-Prohibition Lager, as well as his reputation as a judge, he's among the best qualified people around to judge this style). If he is available and willing to judge (he has been a big supporter of the Dixie Cup in the past), we would similarly welcome Pierre Celis as a judge on the Tripel panel. [If you're gonna be at the MCAB and feel we should extend you a similar courtesy, feel free to write and we'll look it over.] I suspect that, after master and the aforementioned non-master judges are seated, there will still be openings for 6-9 or so National judges per session. The ultimate selection process will be up to Steve Moore, and beyond a general commission to do the best possible job I'm not gonna try to tell him how to run things. (I'll be handling beer check in and logistical support, but Steve will be "da man" as far as competition decisions are concerned. This bifurcated responsibility is designed in part to assure that the beers are judged "double blind" -- neither Steve, nor the stewards, nor of course the judges will know anything regarding who brewed what numbered beer, and only I and the folks who help me with beer check in will have any knowledge regarding the identity of the beers in the competition.) If you're a National Judge interested in judging, check in with me at the check in table Friday afternoon / Saturday morning at the hotel. I'll present the list of available judges to Steve (by phone), and he'll tell me who to put on the bus with a judge pass . . . . Hope to see as many as possible of you at the MCAB. Even if you're not an entrant and even if you don't judge, it'll be a real good time . . . Louis K. I currently am missing the points for 2 comps dating back a year and a half. I am not a point whore but the lack of recording points has put me in the "inactive" status; a problem that I think is far worse than the loss of a point or two. What can the Board do to compel the timely posting of points by the AHA? I at first thought; give them 30 days from the competition to register the points, after that make it $5.00 a judge. A problem with that approach is then they would say "Fine, save some money and don't register the points at all." I have checked with Russ Wigglesworth and he has no reponse from someone named Brian at the AHA on my competitions and other AHA comps. He suggested I send my complaint to AHA with attention to Cathy Ewing. He hopes this will spur some results. A question I have for the Board; is there an actual contract specifying the registration agreement? If there is, this would be a breach of contract and a class action suit would get their attention, or, hopefully, a letter of that intent would wake them up. --Next_Part_SYNC82975D014-- Received: from srvr20.engin.umich.edu (root at srvr20.engin.umich.edu [141.212.2.26]) by srvr5.engin.umich.edu (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id BAA11476 for ; Tue, 19 Jan 1999 01:05:42 -0500 (EST) Received: from synchro.com (cccox.ne.mediaone.net [24.128.144.90]) by srvr20.engin.umich.edu (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id BAA10758 for ; Tue, 19 Jan 1999 01:05:41 -0500 (EST) From: "JudgeNet - the beer judge digest" To: "Digest Recipients" Reply-To: "JudgeNet - the beer judge digest" Subject: Digest for the period 01/18/99 - 01/19/99 Message-ID: Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 01:01:31 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/digest; boundary="Next_Part_SYNC82975D014" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Hops: 1 Status: RO --Next_Part_SYNC82975D014 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Table of contents ------------------------------------------------------ Re: Digest for the period 01/17/99 - 01/18/99 (Bill Slack) KCBM Homebrew Competition (Steven Ford) The BJCP (Al Korzonas) Still more MCAB stuff (Louis Bonham) Recording points (Nathaniel P. --Next_Part_SYNC82975D014--
