Jay was involved in the process that developed the new sheets. We also used the accompanying cover sheets for both the judges and entrants benefit. My opinion was that they did indeed lend to a wider range of scores being assigned. They also tended to lower the scores in general. We had alot more scores in the teens than in the past, and still had VERY few scores in the 40s. Maybe the fact that the appearance category has fewer points is the reason for the lower scores. For a well made beer, those are relatively easy points to earn. Ken Jucks ------------------------------ From: Dave Sapsis Date: Wed, 1 Apr 1998 11:01:35 -0800 Subject: conventions v. rules The thread concerning the new scoresheets, and their accompanying range guidelines raises the old 19 as minimum score issue. I fiind it quite amusing that some folks consider this in fact a practice which must be maintained, while to the best of my knowledge it is simply a convention that has developed adherents. I have never felt compelled to use it as a practice, but very infrequently score beers lower than 20. The basic point remains that the judge should give solid feedback on impressions and marks you were looking for, and feedback on how to bridge the gap. Score failrly and justify it with comments. Do not be rude or overly critical -- put something in there to keep the brewer open to the challenge and feeling good about the effort. As a point of reference regarding how scoring works, when I took the exam, I was fed an absolutely vile beer by a person that shall remain anonymous to protect his/her justified reputation. I ended up giving the beer a 15 -- and was marked down on my exam because I scored the beer higher than the proctors! I learned later that the proctor was the maker, and as is usuall, it is pretty easy to dis ones own failures. My take: go to the heart of the evaluation, and be gentle where necessary. Let the chips fall where they will. peace, - --dave ------------------------------ From: "Ray Estrella" Date: Thu, 2 Apr 1998 04:43:50 -0600 Subject: score sheets Hello to all, Is there a web-site that has the new score sheets and guidelines? Does anyone know of one with blank "regular" score sheets? Thanks, Ray Estrella Cottage Grove MN ray-estrella at msn.com ****** Never Relax, Constantly Worry....have a better Homebrew ****** ------------------------------ From: kbjohns at peakaccess.net Date: Thu, 02 Apr 1998 07:07:42 -0500 Subject: [none] Last year I complained that the AHA did not list all scores for the first round of the Nationals. They only listed winners. All I received was a score sheet with comments, that I felt, in my case were nbot of much interest. The way the results were published, I had no idea wheather my entry was in a taste off, just missed a taste off by 1 pt or was far from placing. I wanted to see a complete run down of the categories scores The response was that this would be embarrassing and more important meaningless because of multiple flights etc. I think the AHA did not want to do the extra work. The NYCSRHBC lists all entrants by # and the names of the first three places in a category. We also identify the flight if a category was done in multiple flights. If interested please visit URL http://www.wp.com/hosi/ and look under results. Category 6 is a good example. Please ignore the lack of columns (did it quickly to get the results up). I hope those running the nationals this year will make this change to better give an entrant a better feel for how his beer stacks up.
