Bruce Stevens posted: >I recently heard from a distressed friend who had received back score >sheets and ribbons from a competition with disparaging stuff on them. I assume that this is a typo and that the scores sheets did not have disparaging stuff on them. As far as I know all judging was done anonymously, so if there were personal remarks on the score sheets I would like to know about it. Bruce?? If you get a gusher (that's infected not just overcarbonated), call for a 2nd bottle to make sure it isn't an isolated infection problem. The brewer probably paid at least $5 plus shipping, so don't let something funky in one bottle knock it out. True story: In my first contest as a judge, I had the worst beer I ever tried. It was a helles bock that gushed, was dark brown, smelled like bacon and tasted, uh, fecal. One look, one sniff, one sip, 19. The two other judges said "justify your score, we're more than 7 apart." Bottoms up scoring, the most I could give it was an 8 (4 for body; 1 in all others); they had given it a 7 and a 9. I couldn't talk them into just giving a 19, so we left it at 8. My final comment was "You have a major infection problem. Please try your beer before submitting it." But I still filled out the rest of the sheet, identifying perceptions and flaws. On another topic, has anyone else used the new score sheets? Are there any guidelines for them? At the TRASH competition in Pittsburgh last week, they were used. For those who haven't seen them, appearance was cut from 6 to 3 points, and 2 points extra were given to aroma, and 1 extra to flavor (total of 12 and 20, respectively). Personally, I don't care for the change, but I did like the renaming of body to mouthfeel and including additional descriptors for carbonation, warmth, creaminess, astringency and other palate sensations. There are other checkboxes for style accuracy, technical merit and "intangibles", and the scoring guide has more categories. For example a "problem" beer is now 0-13. Does that mean the old "give it a 19" guideline is out? I like the new scoring guidelines, but does it mean re-learning how to score a beer? No suggestions here, but I was wondering what other people think. If the score sheet were a software product, I would have expected "release notes" to help me understand this "upgrade." Any insights on how best to employ the new sheets?
