I have judged many hundreds of beers in competitions, and certainly I've come across some pretty vile examples...but I would not *ever* consider filling out an evaluation without first tasting the beer. Even if I know it's going to be bad, I feel I owe it to the brewer to give a complete assessment, and last time I checked, 19 points out of 50 were for flavor. I am speaking from very recent experience, as this happened to me this very afternoon while judging. Alas, the beer tasted even worse than it smelled. But, I was able to give more pointed and hopefully helpful feedback to the brewer after tasting, as a different problem was revealed that may help the brewer narrow the problem area. I was still able to finish up the other 18 beers in the flight, then drive 4 hours home. God, I love this sport! While the competition coordinator(or organiser) has most of the responsibilities, he has little to say about the actual outcome of events-Much like the Engineer on a train he has little to say about how fast the trains goes, where it goes or who pays for a ticket, but let just one little thing go wrong, AND GUESS WHO CATCHES HELL!! This is for Ken and any other organiser out there who has had to deal with comitee made decisions and trains running wild, The chain that we forge to make a good homebrew competition is only as strong as it's weakest link. Take a break, You desirve it!! To those naysayers and poopslingers, I say FIE!, Don't knock someone unless you are prepared to take over his job... ------------------------------ End of judge-digest V1 #1558 **************************** Send subscription cancellations & changes to judge-request at synchro.com.
