On that = basis the IPA could be placed into either American or English categories = but judged as an IPA on style guidelines. Unfortunately, the English IPA has become a shadow of its former self. = Commercial examples are really only ordinary bitters (OG 1.035-1.039). = Few if any are above 1.040 and few have anything more than 30-35 IBU's. = English hopping schedules are less ambitious than those in North = America. The classic English example was Worthington White Shield which = used to be around 1.055 (IBU's?) and is now about 1.050 (or is it = 1.048?). This is very much a worthwhile drink when bought fresh from = the "Super" in England. Youngs Ramrod is a nice example but it is not = marketed as an IPA. The moniker IPA has become a marketing designation = rather than a style guideline now. I feel that the American IPAs now better represent the original style, = at least in hopping and original gravity. Consequently, I am now of the = view that the designation should be moved from the English category to = the American one. Adherence to a style based on the geographic origin = of the hop is of less consequence than the other more dominant = characterisitics of the beer, such as hopping rates, hopping schedules = and gravity. I have been informed that the term the BJCP uses is "registered." I thought it was "recognized." I think that registered is a pretty good word. Unfortunately, the BJCP web site is somewhat unclear about which term to use, and the general public still uses recognized and sanctioned to describe BJCP registered competitions. - -- Jeremy Bergsman jeremybb at stanford.edu http://www-leland.stanford.edu/~jeremybb ------------------------------ End of judge-digest V1 #1528 **************************** Send subscription cancellations & changes to judge-request at synchro.com.
