Last year I judged an afternoon session of Strong Ales with an excellent group of BJCP judges, including a National judge. By the end of the long flight of high alcohol, high hop brews I noticed signs of palate fatigue in one of the judges (I was fighting it myself so I started watching the others more closely). I also noticed some small signs of his getting buzzed. He "humbly" but immediately agreed to do BOS when he was asked at the end of our flight. Frankly, I can't believe his palate had 27 beers left in it (fortunately, there weren't that many after categories collapsed). I carefully posed a question that told me he wasn't open to a suggestion to reconsider. Does this mean BOS judges should not come off of two full flights of judging? Perhaps. Should they only judge BOS if their last round was low alcohol/low hops (less palate fatiguing)? Dunno.
