Although rare, there are instances when there is no beer deserving of 1st place. If a beer isn't good enough to be considered for BOS, it should not get 1st place. This should not prevent awarding a 2nd and 3rd place though. In addition to the organizers stting minimums for 1st place, if the judges feel none of the beers deserve 1st, they should inquire with the organizers as to whether he would allow a "no 1st" ruling for a given category. Final decision should belong to the organizers, it is THEIR competition. But, the judges should be confident enough to suggest the possibility if needed. As for BOS. I like the idea of advancing all 1st place beers to the BOS round. If a beer did well enough to get 1st in its category, it deserves consideration for BOS. Referring to a much earlier thread on BOS, these beers should all be judged in terms of which one is the best representation of style. If one flight of judges happens to be scoring low, for whatever reason, the beer they select as 1st should still get equal consideration as representative of style. David Houseman mentions the BOS during BUZZ-OFF. I was one of the 5 BOS judges this year (thank you very much BUZZ-OFF), and I feel it was handled extremely well. 27 was the most beers I have ever done in any one flight, BOS or otherwise, but it was not a problem for BOS. Each judge went through the beers solo, then we were each allowed to nominate a beer to be excluded. All other judges had the opportunity to veto an exclusion, if they felt they would like to see that beer as BOS. This managed to exclude 4 beers in the first go round (one exclusion was vetoed, and set aside for further discussion later). Next go round got 5 more. At this point we all felt confident in putting forth our preference in #1. This process resulted in a sort of meet in the middle type approach, and worked very well. As Dave mentions, they have some very good mead makers up there. There was a Cyser in the BOS round. It was extremely good. One judge did not like the idea of giving BOS in a homeBREW competition to a Mead or Cider. This Cyser was soo good, I vetoed this exclusion, and the Cyser was definitely in the top runners for BOS. All in all, BUZZ-OFF was the best run competition I have partricipated in, after 12 years of judging, and BOS went very well. _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. The quickest way and most fair way (concerning the amount of time some beers will remain open and lose character) is to pour all beers for the BOS judges. As they get the beers they each make notes as to what they like/dislike about them. After all beers are poured each BOS judge selects his top three beers. Now 3 beers, times 5 judges will not equal 15. Beer Math is fun. Considering most BOS judges will recognize identical beers, you will probably see only 7 beers left on the table. Now it's time for your discussions. If you're in luck, 4 or all 5 judges may pick the same beer and chances are this beer might have the best chance of being BOS after all is said and done. It's easier to discuss seven beers at the end than discuss beers one by one as they are served. If you take five minutes to decide if you're going to keep a beer on the table, you're at two hours (5min x 25 beers) before you get down to doing final discussions on those seven that you may have saved. -- Dennis Davison mailto:ddavison at execpc.com BJCP Representative for the Midwest http://www.bjcp.org --Next_Part_SYNC493520023 Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Return-Path: Received: from postoffice.harvard.net by synchro.com with POP3 (Mailtraq/1.0.0.997) id SYNC49121EDA8; Mon, 31 Aug 1998 00:21:23 -0400 Received: from meg.pdq.net (pop.pdq.net [204.145.251.79]) by deliverance.harvard.net (8.8.7/8.8.7) with SMTP id AAA04170 for ; Mon, 31 Aug 1998 00:19:37 -0400 (EDT) X-AirNote: 1 X-AIGTO: judge at synchro.com Received: from 56K-244.MaxTNT5.pdq.net [209.144.24.244-9] by meg.pdq.net; Sun, 30 Aug 1998 23:19:54 -0500 Message-ID: <35EA246A.8C2FAD91 at pdq.net> Date: Sun, 30 Aug 1998 23:19:54 -0500 From: swm Reply-To: "JudgeNet - the beer judge digest" Errors-To: judge-owner at synchro.com Sender: judge at synchro.com X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.5b1 [en] (Win98; I) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: JudgeNet - the beer judge digest Subject: Announcement: Dixie Cup '98 References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-UIDL: 090453718404174 X-Hops: 3 X-POST-MessageClass: 10; Mailing List Message Guest Speakers for the 15th Annual Dixie Cup Homebrew Competition Announced Speakers include Fritz Maytag of Anchor Brewing Company along with other notable beer and homebrew community luminaries HOUSTON, August 24, 1998 – The Foam Rangers, Houston’s original homebrew club, announced today the guest speakers for their 15th annual Dixie Cup Homebrew competition to be held in Houston on October 23rd and 24th. This is reasonable when only one BOS beer is selected, though when we followed this procedure at the 1995 Nationals, I was still uneasy about not being able taste all of the beers. This included Dennis Davison's Eisbock, which had scored a 50 in the preliminaries. The split BOS panel was used in one of the Capital District Opens, with three panels selecting one beer, and then the final panel ranking those beers one-two-three. Problem was that some good beers were culled out in these mini-pre-BOS and we were stuck with a beer with wild yeast flavors and two others which were out of style. I've done BOS judging with as many as 24 beers, and while it does take some coordination and planning ahead, it is possible for the panel to taste all of these beers and select the top three in a reasonable amount of time (30-45 minutes). The judges can usually knock out half of the entries evy quickly, and then there is a much more managable set of 12 or fewer beers to debate.
