Thank you to all the brewers who submitted your beers and meads for evaluation. There were many, many good brews and several great ones. Thanks also to the judges and stewards, some of whom traveled through a few states to get to St. Louis. Individual scores will be on the Brews web page in a week or so (www.stlbrews.org). Score sheets will be going in the mail soon after Christmas. We are also evaluating a score sheet from each judge and will be getting feedback to judges around the first of the year. Seems to me, that this question will get kicked around forever... :) Ultimately, it is simply up to the competition organizer to decide how the competition will be organised (!) and then require bottles as appropriate. Then it is up to the entrants to determine whether or not they want to enter brews. As for my _opinion_ on how to do this, I'd still vote for three bottles. Doing two flights and simply judging best and worst by comparing scores is not a great way to go, to my mind in spite of John S.' contention that variation between flights is relatively unimportant. I am also not a big fan of judging a mini-BOS on beers at the end of a flight when a) some have been out and open for a long time and b) palate fatigue is at its worst. There is, of course, also the potential problem of division of the brews that puts the 5 best in on flight, and only garbage in another flight, but intelligent judging should be able to rule that out. I still seem to like it best when three beers are picked from a flight in styles that have a huge number of entries using the first bottle, and those are combined for a second round of judging on the second bottle, leaving the third bottle for BOS competition. Yes, it leaves a lot of bottles. I have four cases of now empty bottles as a result of several years of judging at the Minnesota Brewfest. And I like the way they make the comp run. Now, if I would only give up kegging long enough to get rid of all those bottles... We are in Lahaska, Pennsylvania, on Rt 202 in Bucks County, about 5 miles from New Jersey. The contest will again be held at the Buckingham Mountain Brewery and Restaurant, who have been excellent hosts to us in the past two years. There is still time for me to mail entry forms. Requests to: folsom at ix.netcom.com Judges and stewards should contact our Judge Coordinator, Nate Brese, at: rahneb at rohmhaas.com. Note that this is a correction, if you sent mail to the address posted earlier, or to the one on the flyer, it probably didn't reach Nate. (oops). We are hoping to top last year's 333 entries, and fill the expanded and improved facilities at Buckingham Mountain with judges!
