In New England we have our own guideline that we use for the competitions that go to determine the New England Homebrewer of the year. The problem truly is that no one pays much attention to the guideline whether you use the AHA or the BJCP'S. Judges give the first place to beers which are grossly outside the guidelines and brewers know that to win, the beer has to be bigger then life. If you are concerned about styles then make the guideline, whatever you use, part of the rules. Disqualify any beer that the judges feel is out side of the guide lines rather then rewarding these out of style beers with the ribbons.
