Well, being one of the parties who talked about this, I will respond. The competition I was talking about sharing the beer with *was* the first round Nationals, and certainly there were categories that did not have a mini-BOS, and of course during those, the stewards were encouraged to "drink all they wanted". However, when we knew that we had a mini-BOS, the judges were quite sparing of the amount and the steward was even more sparing. In every case, there was a half bottle left for the mini-BOS, which should be plenty for two or three judges to use to evaluate the beer, and having been on a couple of the mini-BOS panels, it was quite sufficient. With care in the first round, the stewards can still participate. dion - -- Dion Hollenbeck (619)597-7080x164 Email: hollen at vigra.com http://www.vigra.com/~hollen Sr. Software Engineer - Vigra Div. of Visicom Labs San Diego, California ------------------------------ From: Craig Pepin Date: Wed, 4 Jun 1997 03:20:01 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Re: Rye beer Regarding Thurn and Taxis Roggen bier: I was in Regensburg last month and had some Thurn and Taxis Roggen. However, I think it and Schierlinger are one and the same. I don't have my books handy, but I recall that Thurn and Taxis made Schierlinger, and may have simply decided to market it under their own name, or modified the recipe and therefore changed the name for that reason. Paulaner recently bought Thurn and Taxis, but I'm not sure if the name change predates this takeover. Of course, if I go back and check my books and turn out to be wrong, then you can all laugh at me. Large chunks of my memory are currently being take up by dissertation work. That'll be something of a task, as it's the same beer. The first I heard of it or saw the new labels & name was at a tasting with Jackson at the National Geographic Society in DC. We debated for a while at the table whether it was the same beer or not. The question was answered by my take-home materials, which clarified that the beer has always been made by Thurn & Taxis, and on 7/15/96 the label changed to list the brewery name instead of the city. Whatever you call it, a very neat brew. Cheers! - -- Bret D. Wortman Manassas, VA WortmanB at usa.net Reality is an illusion that occurs due to the lack of alcohol. . W.C.
