CALL For Judges -- 1997 BUZZ Off! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Robert Paolino Date: Sun, 11 May 1997 20:33:14 -0500 (CDT) Subject: Big and Huge The 11th Annual Big and Huge was (ironically?) the smallest in recent memory. Indeed, every competition I've judged this year (and I judge pretty regularly) has been way down on entries. Are people not brewing anymore, or are they just burned out on competitions? (I have to admit that it's been a long time since I've entered a competition, so I suppose I'm guilty, too.) Anyway, here are the results: "Big" Beers (Ales and Lagers combined after first round judging): 1.050-1.060 1st Mike Lelivelt, Sun Prairie, WI Rauch (BOS) 2nd Mike Lelivelt, Sun Prairie, WI Dortmunder 3rd Bruce Garner, Madison, WI Weizen "Huge" Beers (Ales and Lagers combined after first round judging): over 1.060 1st Mike Ball, Cambridge, WI Doppelbock 2nd Robb Harris, Madison, WI Traditional Mead (FH) 3rd Mike Lelivelt, Sun Prairie, WI Barleywine Thanks to the entrants, judges, stewards, prize sponsors, and the Great Dane for their participation in the event. And special thanks to John Barbian, who by taking on co-organiser/registrar duties, gave me the chance (finally) to judge in a Big and Huge. Now go have a beer, Bob Paolino rpaolino at earth.execpc.com Madison ------------------------------ From: "Roger Deschner " Date: Sun, 11 May 1997 21:04:12 CDT Subject: 818 1st round NHC entries in Chicago - HELP! Pardon the cross-posting, but we're in a bind. We have now finished unpacking the entries for the Chicago Region of the National Homebrew Competiton 1st Round, and we have a staggering 818 entries, and nowhere near enough judges signed up yet to judge them. If you can possibly come to Chicago next weekend, May 16-18, PLEASE CONSIDER IT. Judging will take place Friday evening, Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon, and Sunday midday. As an added bonus this is also be the weekend of the Midwest International Beer Exposition. We are not expecting all judges to judge at all judging sessions - to give you a chance to go to the expo, which is only about one mile from the judging location. Rub elbows with the bigwigs of beer, like Michael Jackson, in a setting much cozier and more relaxed than something like GABF. Send e-mail NOW to Judge Director Tom Fitzpatrick at . He'll get back to you about the paperwork to sign up. If you already have the form that was mailed out, ask Tom about a fax number to send it to. Remember that, since this is such a large competition, you can get MORE POINTS in the BJCP if you judge more sessions. See http://www.bjcp.org for details. If you will need a place to stay, be advised that there are NO hotel rooms available in Chicago at any price. Send e-mail to Steve Hamburg at for information about the Beds (and sofas and floors) for Judges Program. Some other competitions are experiencing lower numbers. Not this one! (Anyone who knows of a larger single competition having ever been held outside the State of Texas, please let me know.)
