Kostritzer Schwarzbier is easily available in the NY metro area. It is only one example of the style, so it shouldn't be used as an absolute benchmark, but it is there for the tasting. Have fun! George De Piro (Nyack, NY) ------------------------------ From: "Thomas, Andrew R" Date: Thu, 1 May 1997 12:38:57 -0500 Subject: steam beer judging, again, for the last time > > I make this suggestion even though this is a style I like to brew. >I try to make my own version of Anchor (Hi there, Fritz) at least once or >twice a year, and I've been known to buy a few in between batches. I'm fond of >Anchor. It's just that I've always felt it to be most at home nestled among the pale ales, rather than the sole exemplar of its own unique style. Cheers, Byron Burch Ditto Byron, thanks for that good input. I also worry about Steam Beer/ Cal Common as a category, but mostly for judging issues. People should be aware that Steam Beer is a ONE BEER category right now, and anchor is not representative, as a sole representative, of 30 or 100 steam beer breweries which used to exist on the West Coast. Other categories get much more "judging latitude" from a qualified BJCP judge, and it is easier with steam to "miss the mark" so to speak. I would applaud the efforts of any beer historian who could unearth any records about what the other steam breweries and products used to be like. Suppose there might be any sunken ships in the SF Bay just like there were in the English Channel? Brewery records available anywhere? Pictures of beer from the 1850's or 1860's? out there....even just a picture of a beer in a glass would tell something of the depth of color....even if it was just black and white. I know that American Pilsner now is also not representative for example of what it was like in much earlier days, but I guess I am just a bit preoccupied with Anchor as a "one standard category" right now. Once again, hats off to Fritz and the great job his guys like Tim and others do in the brewhouse. We love you, man. andy ------------------------------ End of judge-digest V1 #1432 **************************** Send subscription cancellations & changes to judge-request at synchro.com.
