For example, the recent GAzBF took place on Friday evening and Saturday all day and had just under 200 entries. Putting aside the fact that I judged BOS (thanks, Rick, it was great), if I had just showed up on Friday night, I would have gotten the same 1 point that I would have gotten for judging both Friday night and Saturday (2 sessions, 1 each day). First, I would like to hear other people's read on this, and secondly, hear what the BJCP intended when they set up the points schedule like this. Did you realize at all how unfair it is for one judge to get the exact same number of points as another after having judged twice the number of sessions and spent twice the time? It is also not an accurate representation of how much experience the two judges got. One will get the same credit for twice the amount of experience gained. thanks, dion Organizer America's Finest City Homebrew Competition March 8, 1997 Quality Ale and Fermentation Fraternity, Sponsor http://www.vigra.com/~hollen/AFCHBC.html - --- Dion Hollenbeck (619)597-7080x164 Email: hollen at vigra.com http://www.vigra.com/~hollen Sr. Software Engineer - Vigra Div. of Visicom Labs San Diego, California ------------------------------ From: Date: Mon, 14 Apr 1997 13:07:34 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Pick up some points, judge at the SE AHA nationals This year the southeastern portion of the AHA nationals will be sponsored by the Covert Hops Society in Atlanta, Georgia. A mailer describing the event was sent to each BJCP judge from the south east on the list supplied by the AHA, with a reply date of April 18th. If you have not confirmed that you wish to judge please do so ASAP.If you did not receive an invitation, are qualified (either BJCP,Brewing school graduate, experienced brewer and judge, etc) and wish to judge the first round of the nationals, please contact us ASAP. For convenience an email address has been set up expressly for this purpose: sejudges at juno.com. On behalf of the competition co-organizers, we'd like to thank those that have already replied. We expect ~600 entries, and judging over 2 to 3 days, so some serious points and experience can be accumulated. There will be an abundance of beer, comraderie and catered food. Hope to see you there, Lee Gross ------------------------------ From: Jim Cave Date: Mon, 14 Apr 1997 13:25:36 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Spices in Belgian Strong ale Al Korzonas in the HBD, commented about the presence of spices in Strong Belgian Ales, further noting that the AHA guidelines do not indicate presence of spices. Do any of you have any comment on whether you would find this acceptable if you discovered such a beer in the NHC this year? Would you adjust your score (downwards) if you detected what may be an appropriate level of spice, in consideration of the AHA style guidelines, even though the beer may be a ringer for McChouffe? Would such a beer more appropriately be placed in the spiced ale category?
