Recognizing that it would be hard to find more than 40 judges, could you not limit the competition to a given number of entries (say 200), or perhaps limit the number of entries per category. I'll try to make it to your fine competion again next year. I think the point has not been driven home hard enough! There AREN'T many mead categories in the BJCP Guidelines!! There are in fact very FEW categories. The expanded mead guidelines is a COMPLETELY separate document that will probably only serve as a reference. The mead "purists" are entitled to their opinion about whether mead should have fruit or spices included, just as beer purists thumb their noses at fruit and spice beers. > Nothing restricts the ability of an organizer to edit or synthesize > in order to reduce the amount of paper. The AHA guidelines fit on three double-sided sheets. A few people have contacted me about the size of the BJCP guidelines. Would there be interest in a miniaturized version of the guidelines that DOES fit on two sheets? The scaled down version would probably have to do without the commercial examples to fit on two sheets. - -Tom Fitzpatrick ------------------------------ From: korz at xnet.com Date: Tue, 25 Mar 1997 14:50:25 -0600 (CST) Subject: Hybrid meads AND *beers* Bruce brings up an important point regarding meads, but it is just as applicable to beers. What if a brewer or meadmaker creates a beverage that contains both fruits *and* herbs or fruits *and* spices or spices *and* herbs? I have volunteered for the Beer Guidelines subcommittee, but could someone on the Mead Guideline subcommittee take this up as a point of discussion? Thanks. Al. There has been some discussion about using a computer and leaving it at home for the actual event. IMHO that's like ordering Surf & Turf and just eating the salad. There is very little work involved in running the computer during the event, but some major paybacks. In the Beer Competition Organizer software I provide for a $25 service charge, we expect each panel of judges to select the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finisher and to fillout a summary sheet showing the scores for all beers judges. The summary sheet is printed in the same order as an input screen for that flight. The result is literally seconds to input 10-20 scores and identify the winners. Then we print a Best of Show pull-list (not required). Moreover, we print a list of winners and THEIR TOWN & STATE. This allows the organizer to assign appropriate prizes (no shipping cases of beer or restaurant certificates to out of towners). The awards ceremony is arranged during BOS judging and goes fairly smoothly. This is just my recommendation based a number of events, but everyone has different needs -- if all entries are local, my comments don't apply.
