There is a relatively small core of twenty or so graders who are bearing the brunt of the scoring responsibilities, and it's definitely time to bring in some new blood to handle the increasing number of exams. Requirements: Generally National or Master judges, though Certified judges who have scored above 90 are also welcome. In some cases, Certified judges who have scored above 80 and are close to National level may grade exams with a recommendation from a current grader or BJCP Board member. Having an academic background helps, as does having internet access. Commitment: Graders spend an average of 45 minutes on each exam, and with additional time for arriving at consensus scores and completing the Report to Participant form, an hour per exam is a good estimate. Most active graders grade a set of 6-10 exams every 2-3 months, with a four week turnaround on each set. Incentives: Graders become part of the Grand Master program, with the basic service requirement consisting of 200 exams scored and four administered. In addition, it looks like the BJCP Board will approve the granting of 0.1 non-judging experience point for each exam scored, with the total rounded to the nearest half point and accrued at the end of the year. These non-judging points are treated the same as those from organizing - half of the point requirements for a given level must come from judging. Of course since most graders are National or Master judges, these points are not that important unless you live in remote areas where there are few competitions. I should also note that grading a few sets of exams is an excellent way for those who have scored in the 80s to study for a retake to hopefully score above 90. Apprenticeship: New graders will be paired with experienced ones for the first few grading assignments, just as at a homebrew competition. Lead graders generally have scored on the order of 100 exams. The grading mechanics are spelled out thoroughly in scoring guidelines which I distribute with each set of exams. Thanks for your time. Obviously, the BJCP cannot Bryan> enforce whatever agreements are understood, but can we state Bryan> explicitly what these are? I can pretty much answer this one and again, someone correct me if I am wrong. Both organizations require that you: 1) Abide by a basic set of how to run a competition that assures fairness for entrants and a good atmosphere for judges. 2) Return scoresheets and awards to the brewers in a timely fashion. 3) Report judge/steward points awards in a timely fashion. 4) File an organizer's report in a timely fashion. Nowhere can I find in any of either organizations materials that you have to use any specific set of style guidelines, nor any specific set of forms or score sheets. dion Organizer America's Finest City Homebrew Competition March 8, 1997 Quality Ale and Fermentation Fraternity, Sponsor http://www.vigra.com/~hollen/AFCHBC.html - --- Dion Hollenbeck (619)597-7080x164 Email: hollen at vigra.com http://www.vigra.com/~hollen Sr. Software Engineer - Vigra Div. of Visicom Labs San Diego, California ------------------------------ From: Bill Giffin Date: Fri, 14 Mar 1997 12:10:25 -0600 Subject: Computers and competitions Good afternoon, We here in Maine run two fair sized competitions each year, over 200 entries, and we don't use a computer to run either one of them. We stopped using a computer over three years ago as we found that it took more time to use the computer and it delayed the running of the competition. One of the competitions, The Common Ground Fair, takes in entries the day of competition as many as a hundred and the avoidance of the computer makes it possible to run and start the competition on time. To use the computer you have to enter the information. When you don't use the computer the entrant enters the information and very little hast to be entered by the competition. To me it seems to be an added PITA on the day of the event. My experience has been that the computer creates a bottleneck that slows everything down. Whatever needs to be done can be accomplished on paper and be kept much simpler. Ask Kieran O'Connor, he 'll agree with me and he is a computer nerd for his living! (no offense meant there Kieran).
