Then readers of Judge Digest would >Ed> judge this beer and place their score and comments in Judge >Ed> Digest. This would give the writers practice and show beginners >Ed> how a score sheet should be filled out. I would love to see such an arrangement. I have been an apprentice judge, and now that I'm all-grain brewing (only decotion mashes so far) I plan to take the test when it is near again. It would be helpful. and the Dion writes: >While this is a great idea and I agree that in theory it would >contribute to experience, in practice, there is a fatal flaw. >This was brought up before and no one ever had an idea on how to >get around the flaw. I have two things on this: While I'm not a oft-traveller, I have noticed that there are some beers than seem to very similar regardless of where they are bought. The differences in regions and storage might be a fatal flaw, but until one tries it out, you never know for certain if it interferes too much. Yes, using PU or other beers infamous (rightly or wrongly) for off-flavors might not suffice, but there may be beers that would not have as much trouble. You might identify common staling flavors in beers, and understand that they may be regional; on the other hand, they might not. It might just be a WAG. My twist of this idea of judging the beer, is to take a beer that is NOT [usually thought of as] representative of a style, and judge it as if it was entered as a particular style. Judge a Guinness as a ROBUST PORTER or an OATMEAL STOUT; a Paulaner Oktoberfest as a ALTBIER or an AMERICAN AMBER ALE; A Budwesier (US) as a CREAM ALE; A Bass Ale as a ORDINDARY BITTER; Sierra Nevada Pale Ale as an INDIA PALE ALE; an Anchor Steam Beer as a AMERICAN PALE ALE, and so forth. This way you need to pay attention to the beer and really judge it against the specifications without much expectations; we may be surprised at how well (or how badly) some beers do in the "wrong" category. You probably won't be judging many 40+ beers, and also probably many 35+ beers; but then again, those are probably a minority of all beers judged, in contests overall. And [we] brewers of 34 and less beers would like accurate score sheets as well. You would still have experience judging beers, and we could all compare what was determined individually, and judges current and judges to be would have practice judging beers not quite to style. OK, so how do you support a large competition with only two bottles? We only require two, but it bothers me that in large categories like Pale Ale, a single panel MUST judge all the entries, in case two panels are very far apart in their scores. How do you handle this? I hate to give a single panel 30 entries to judge. dion Organizer America's Finest City Homebrew Competition March 8, 1997 Quality Ale and Fermentation Fraternity, Sponsor http://www.vigra.com/~hollen/AFCHBC.html - --- Dion Hollenbeck (619)597-7080x164 Email: hollen at vigra.com http://www.vigra.com/~hollen Sr. Software Engineer - Vigra Div. of Visicom Labs San Diego, California ------------------------------ From: Charles Hudak Date: Mon, 24 Feb 1997 09:23:53 -0800 Subject: Re: judge-digest V1 #1390 John Wilson writes: > Basically, if we all disagree or > agree that Sierra Nevada is the quintessential American pale ale Holy cow, not here too! This kind of biased thinking is scary. Yes, I agree that SNPA is a fine example of the American Pale Ale style, but "quintessential"? How can a person objectively judge a style when, even subconciously, they are looking for a clone beer. There are many examples of fine commercial American pale ales (e.g. Mad River Steelhead Extra Pale Ale) that are vastly different in character from SNPA yet fit the style guidelines. How could they ever get a fair shake if you're judging them, not on their merit, but "against" SNPA or any other beer for that matter? I'd like to get some feedback on this, flame me if you must! ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Charles Hudak Head Mash Tun Shoveler San Diego Brewing Co 619.284.BREW cwhudak at abac.com ------------------------------ From: Dennis Davison Date: Mon, 24 Feb 1997 12:10:44 -0600 Subject: BoS Judging After sitting in on one this past weekend, I must say that whatever the mix, the judges need to know styles of beer and be familiar with them. There was an excellent Smoked Beer at KC which I would have loved to champion to BoS, but when you hear, "I don't know much about smoked beers" from two judges and one judge doesn't like smoked beers, you know your in for a tough fight that you won't win anyway. Oddly enough the last eight beers consisted of the Smoked, Herb & Spice, Scottish Export, Ordinary Bitter, Vienna, Doppelbock, Fruit and a Kolsch. I don't see any big beer bias here. You have a light, 6 mediums and one big. The Export took it, with the Ordinary a close second. - -- Dennis Davison mailto:ddavison at execpc.com BJCP Representative for the Midwest BJCP President http://www.execpc.com/~ddavison/bjcp.html ------------------------------ From: "Mark S. This year's event will take place on Sat. & Sun., April 5 &6, 1997. The sessions will begin at 9:30 AM The judging is being hosted by McFarlane Brewing Co., 202 South 29th Street, Phoenix, AZ. We are in need of assistance with this event. Over three hundred entries are expected and that will require a healthy staff of judges and stewards. Arizona has a limited number of judges and we are hoping to get some help from some out of state judges. For those of you that don't know, April is a great month to visit Phoenix. The weather is perfect (mid 80's and guaranteed sunny), we have a beer competition and a beer festival. What more could you ask for? No, we don't supply dates, sorry. If you are interested in helping with this growing competition please contact us for a registration form. A ticket for free entry to the associated beer festival ($25 value) is awarded to those people who help judge or steward for the competition. On Saturday free lunch will be served between the morning and afternoon judge sessions. Sundays' session will end prior to the start of the festival. Awards will be presented on Sunday afternoon at the festival site. For out of state guests there is limited space available in private homes or discounted hotel accommodations.. So be the first on your block to get in on the fun.
