Johnston" Date: Fri, 14 Feb 1997 10:43:45 -0500 Subject: Re: comps, BOS, etc. Regarding the selection of BOS judges in advance: I'm not sure that have ever encountered an ENTIRE BOS panel selected in advance.(Except AHA Nationals.) For Moon Madness, we have usually selected from the judges present who do not have a beer in the BOS round. As to experience level distribution: I know several judges with excellent style knowledge and palates who have no desire to progress above their current Recognized or Certified ranking. In some cases, I'll trust their opinions before those of a few higher ranked judges I know. We want to be assured of having the best palates on the BOS panel. I also see nothing wrong with putting an experienced lower ranked judge on a BOS panel as a learning experience, and we have also tried to "reward" the occasional long-distance traveller with an opportunity to gain extra points for their effort. We also try to include the host brewer (if any)--it's a nice gesture, and they usually are not involved with BJCP (although I know that may be changing) so they are not interested in points. I would not put a novice or inexperienced Recognized judge on BOS. As to cups, forms, and such: We use 4 oz juice glasses for Moon Madness, and arrange to have a dishwasher available at the host site. Occasionally this may result in a hot glass or two getting to a table, but the judges have been very good, and patient, about letting them cool down. Most prefer using real glass anyway, so it's a small price to pay. We use the AHA forms. They rarely change and extras are used occasionally during club meetings. - -- "If a man is not a liberal at eighteen, he has no heart. I think that the individual judges for each table should make the decision about which beers to send on. The purpose of the BOS is to select the best beer. This can be achieved, without compromise, if every table only sends on beers it deems to have a chance of winning. Of course, this should be loose requirement, because the judges don't have complete knowledge of how the the other tables' beers were. This is useful for two reasons. If none of your table's beers were very good, you can save the BOS panel some precious time. Secondly, if your table had more than one BOS-worthy beer (or if the judges have a disagreement), it can send them on for the BOS panel to sort out. I've been on panels that have sent on zero, one or two beers to BOS. I've seen BOS panels that awarded a BOS to a beer that the first round judging ranked second. In case you think that awarding BOS to a beer that placed second is sacrilege, realize that this situation is not without precedent. In large competitions, there may be multiple flights of, for instance, porters, that are judged separately. The judges at each separate table send on one, two or three beers to the mini-BOS round, and there the judges may select the overall winners in a different order than the original judges. This also happens at the NHC, with the 2nd round judging ignoring the placings in the 1st round. I think that this relies on the principle that the judges that judge further on in the competition (mini-BOS vs. initial judging, 2nd round vs. 1st round, BOS vs. single-style flight), are likely to be more experienced and should have the ability to "over-rule" the earlier judges. This seems reasonable to me. On a different topic, Al Korzonas made several astute comments about selecting the BOS judges in JudgeNet #1383. I agree with all of them.
