NEED to judge ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Zach Hilgers (Gandalf Mithrandir)" Date: Sat, 1 Feb 1997 10:52:04 -0700 Subject: BOS Judging again! GSMITHBEER states: "Mr.Spencer misses the enter point about the "Vagaries" of any judging...(including home brew by the way.) Can't even tell you how many best of shows I've watched pick a barley wine (or imperial stout - no matter, always a big beer) as the winner, then when you sample it you find it's an undrinkable cough syrup....." I just thought I'd interject an observation I had regarding the "big beer" syndrome at BOS judgings. At the competition held at the 1996 Arizona State =46air I was a BOS judge and the final field was down to about 6 beers, whic= h were then whittled down to 2, those being a Barleywine (of course!) and, believe it or not, a K=F6lsch! Both beers were quite good, but then the discussion of "big beers always winning" came up and we all tasted again. I think that the K=F6lsch won because it was not only an excellent example o= f the style, but that we decided that this was not going to be another "big beer"- winning competition. I for one was glad that a "small beer" could take on the big boys and win!
