While this is a good idea, there is a downside to this as we experienced in our BJCP preparatory classes last October. For each style we presented, we brought at commercial example which usually turned out to be four or more bottles. We passed it out, judged it, then discussed what we tasted. People who got different bottles often had *very* different results, but when we swapped bottles, the other people identified what we did. So, the suggestion I have if this is done is to evaluate several bottles obtained from several sources to be fair to the beer. Not all beers are treated equal by retailers. dion - -- Dion Hollenbeck (619)597-7080x164 Email: hollen at vigra.com http://www.vigra.com/~hollen Sr. Software Engineer - Vigra Div. of Visicom Labs San Diego, California ------------------------------ From: folsom at ix.netcom.com Date: Sun, 19 Jan 1997 07:52:07 -0800 Subject: War of the Worts Winners! Following is the (somewhat lengthy) winners list from the 2nd Annual War of the Worts homebrew Competition held yesterday, 18 January. My thanks to the judges and stewards who made the competition run as smoothly as it did, to the other organizers, Rich Rosowski and Jason Harris for all the work they put into it, to our host, the Buckingham Mountain Brewery and Restaurant, a great restaurant and brewpub worth a visit from anywhere, and especially to the brewers who sent in the 333(!) entries! There is another club which had claimed to have had the largest non-commercial homebrew contest east of the mississippi. We will have to ask them to cease and desist in such claims, at least until next summer! If you want to do something like this, you might take the Just for the sake of discussion, and something that we may want to consider if we *do* someday try to start something like this, I'd like to offer a possible solution. Suppose, rather than awarding a single 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, we awarded a Bronze medal to every beer that was decent, a Silver medal to every beer that was good to excellent, and a *SINGLE* Gold medal to the best beer at the tasting. Sure, this would dilute the impressiveness of the Silver and Bronze medals, but they would perform an important service to the consumer: buying a beer that was awarded a Silver would presumably assure that the beer inside would be one of the better examples of the style and a beer awarded a Bronze would presumably at least be roughly "within style" and pleasant. The Gold would still be very prestigeous because only one was awarded. "Bad beers" or beers that are completely out-of-style (like Samuel Adams Cranberry Lambic [sic]) would be the only ones not getting awards. The competition would provide a service to the consumer by giving them a yardstick by which to measure unfamiliar beers in the store and, yes, be another marketing tool for the breweries. Then again, consider that if we restricted advertising of the awards to point-of-sale, this would further level the playing field because the smaller breweries don't have the cash to take out ads on TV or in Time magazine (just another random thought). But wouldn't creating another commercial competition simply dilute the usefulness of awards from commercial competitions? Perhaps... consider that one of two things will occur: 1. the BJCP competition will surpass all the others and be well-known and respected by both brewers and consumers, or 2. it will be just another competition and yes, *will* dilute the usefullness of awards from commercial competitions. Clearly the benefit of 1 is obvious. 2 may also be a benfit, when you think about it: what harm is it to lessen the marketing value of awards from the WBC (where anyone with $85 can get an award) or the GABF (which awarded a Gold Samuel Adams Boston Ale for the Altbier category)? Incidentally, I really like Bob's suggestion to publish selected comments. Remember, that not only is there potential money for the BJCP from entry fees, but if you published the results, you could make money off that too! Clearly, this would require at least one full-time person and probably several. I don't suggest to do this now, but once we have all the other parts of the BJCP in place and operating smoothly, why not give it a try? Al.
