Most of the comments dealing with the possibility of conducting a BJCP sponsored commercial beer competition were very valid and obviously based upon years of experience as a judge and writer for the beer industry. I however disagree with the point that beer styles are not relevant to the commercial brewer. Many brewers firmly believe that products they produce should adhere to a historical style guide if not current AHA guides. Obviously, some brewers will push the envelope in developing a beer that it can successfully market. As a consumer of probably more beers than I need to drink, I consistently try to obtain beers that are new or different. I often struggle with identifying what style of beer a brewer has attempted. As beer drinkers become more knowledgeable about beer and the various styles available, it becomes more difficult to ascertain if "Dead Guy Ale" is a style that I want to try. Next time you are in your favorite beverage store, just look at the myriad of beers available that offers you very limited clue as to the style of beer that you may be purchasing. All we can gather from the bottle is that it is "brewed in small batches with only the finest malt, water, hops and yeast available". I guess my point is that someone or some organization should encourage brewers, owners, and large corporations to give beer consumers additional information about their beers. If they would print a recipe, a list of ingredients, or a beer style, I would at least have a framework on which to make a buying decision. If BJCP held a commercial competition where the guidelines were similar to our homebrew competitions, then brewers and breweries would know that they must analyze their beer and determine, if they can, where it might fit the established guidelines. After all, homebrewers do that ever time we enter a contest. "Is my last beer a porter or a stout." If they decide their beer doesn't fit the established styles, then they could simply not enter their beer in our competition. Other problems with the concept may preclude the initial effort but I don't believe the styles issue should be a reason. Just maybe, our efforts would be rewarded with even more brewers correctly identifying a close resemblence to some style. It doesn't matter that "Dead Guy Ale" is an American Amber with more hops than the style calls for. At least we have a handle. It might also prevent the increasing marketing of the exact same beer under 2 or more labels just to entice some consumer into pulling that new beer off the shelf. Here's a shoot-from-the-hip 30-second analysis: Pros: ---- - Raise awareness of the BJCP - Alternative to the GABF, and (hopefully) relieving the problems of that competition. - RAISE FUNDS for the BJCP (!!) - Add value to the beer community [if we can't do this, then we shouldn't have the competition, period]. Cons: ---- - a *lot* of work... a LOT of work... - Needs a great deal of analysis just to determine how a competition such as this should be *positioned* and run. - May get a "been there, done that" attitude from the Professional Brewers, i.e. there may simply be no room/interest for another pro competition. We would need to do "market analysis". I am sure that we could come up with over 100 reasons both Pro and Con. Should someone put together an initial proposal for such an endeavor? Anyone? Bueller? That reason is to bolster the treasury of the BJCP in order that we can more effectively pursue our mission. While increased exposure is nice, it is the type of exposure that is quickly forgotten by the general public. I'm not saying I'm against doing something like this. Quite the contrary is true, provided that there is a real benefit to the BJCP other than a lot of long hours and hard work. Any anti-AOB reason for getting into something like this is in my opinion also inappropriate.
