But I will be going even further this year and instructing stewards to check the judge's comments for "usefulness" and existence. I will direct the stewards to inform me if they see judging sheets which seem to be "sketchy" and then I will have my Judge Coordinator go over them carefully, and if necessary, right then and there, instruct the judge to do better. Already, at our judges briefing before the judging, we tell them to fill out the score sheets completely and to give the brewer's good feedback. And our stewards already check the math before turning in the score sheets. The brewers should not have to put up with a "bad judge" one year and complain before getting rid of him/her next year. It should be the responsibility of the organizer to get the judge to provide all the info he/she should the first time round. This should be stressed when the judges are instructed prior to the competition. dion QUAFF President Organizer America's Finest City Homebrew Competition Quality Ale and Fermentation Fraternity, Sponsor http://www.vigra.com/~hollen/AFCHBC.html - --- Dion Hollenbeck (619)597-7080x164 Email: hollen at vigra.com http://www.vigra.com/~hollen Sr. Software Engineer - Vigra Div. of Visicom Labs San Diego, California ------------------------------ From: "Roger Deschner " Date: Mon, 30 Dec 1996 12:29:14 CST Subject: Competition staff cannot judge? ??? > BJCP POINT AWARD STRUCTURE > ><...> > >NOTE: In order to maintain competition integrity, staff members with >access to the entry data should refrain from judging as they may be >able to associate entry numbers or entry descriptions with an >entrant's identity. That is nice to say as a general guideline, but as a practical matter it is impossible, especially in larger competitions. (AHA NHC, Dixie Cup, etc.) You typically have to beg for volunteers for unpacking duty, especially in a large competition where many of the entries are shipped. These unpackers are the ones who assign entry numbers, as they separate scoresheets from bottles. Later, you need to again take whomever you can get, to type the entry form data into computers. Again, in a large competition, this may require a number of people. You select them based on ability to work a computer database system accurately, irrespective of their status as judges. If this legion of volunteers were to be unable to judge, we'd have a severe shortage of either a) judges or 2) processing staff. You've got to be able to recycle the unpackers and computer enterers as judges, or else you will have a severe shortage of both. While it is entirely possible (except in AHA NHC) that one might handle one's own entry, existing organizer procedures already insure that one would not end up judging one's own entry. The fact that I might remember my own entry number, as it passed through, is inconsequential. And, as a competition progresses, it is occasionally necessary to press organizer staff into service as judges, usually as fill-ins for no-show judges. (It would be nice not to have no-shows; let's not get into that here.) Of course, AT THE TIME OF JUDGING, none of the judges should have access to the entry data. If a judge has a question about proper category, etc., a non-judging organizer should do the actual checking of the entry information for the judge. I know this is going to bother purists, but I think a clarification is necessary, to permit prospective judges to handle entries and entry information prior to a competition, and still judge in that competition. Logistics demands it. We must rely on the honor of the individual judges involved in these activities to refrain from recording or memorizing entry numbers and matching entrant names.
