Did Boston Beer COMPANY at least make the promised payment to the BJCP? Does ANYONE know? I've asked twice before, with no reply. It'd be nice if we at least got a token payment for the improper use of our name...;-) The World Homebrew Competition was not in any way sanctioned by the BJCP or even the AHA, as far as I can tell. The AHA did help out with the logistics, but the judging guidelines were hazy to say the least. I noticed Jim Koch (with a head cold) rapid-fire "judging" beers at a nearby table, and I can only guess at the level of feedback those brewers got. In fariness to BBC, though, the aim of tha competition was to identify homebrews for commercial sale. If that wasn't OK, entrants could ask for their entry fee back. ;-)) Maybe we should open a dialogue to set forth judging parameters for future such events. No BJCP judge worth the his/her title should have given any less than their usual effort for each beer. My guess is that if we approach BBC in a conciliatory manner, they might be more willing to listen. If not, we can threaten to sue 'em!! Peter Garofalo ------------------------------ From: jformane at students.uiuc.edu (Joe Formanek) Date: Mon, 13 May 1996 16:19:53 +0800 Subject: BUZZ Boneyard Brewoff - July 20, 1996 Greetings! This is the official announcement for the Second Annual BUZZ Boneyard Brewoff, to be held July 20, 1996 at Joe's Brewery, Champaign, IL. All the pertinent forms are included below. Please contact me if you have any questions Thanks! Joe The Boneyard Union of Zymurgical Zealots Second Annual Boneyard Brew-Off This is the official announcement of the second homebrew competition of the Boneyard Union of Zymurgical Zealots of Champaign, Illinois. The competition, to be held on July 20 1996, will be a BJCP sanctioned competition with all the standard AHA categories (except for cider and sake). In our standard advertising packet is a list of rules, an entry form, bottle forms and a judge registration form. We need entries, judges and stewards! The competition will be held at Boneyard Brew-Off c/o Joe's Brewery 706 S. Fifth St. Champaign IL, 61820. The judging will commence at 9:00am. We will need two unmarked 10 to 16 oz. brown or green bottles, with bottle identification forms attached to each bottle with a rubber band, a completed entry form and $5 sent to Joe's brewery for each entry. We would appreciate entries as soon as possible after July 6, but we will accept walk-on entries as long as they are accompanied by the completed paperwork. Four or more entries by the same brewer qualify for our special, low, low rate of $4 per entry. As in our last competition, the highlight will be our special category: The No One Gets Out Alive High Gravity Brew-Off. In this category we will judge any beer with a gravity over 1.070 purely on the basis of drinkability and octane. We will allow any high gravity style, but if you wish the beer to also be judged in another category, you must separately enter it in that category. No fortification of the beer is allowed. The winners in this category will not be eligible for best of show. Those who contribute their judging expertise will reap many rewards. This includes a beer sodden tour of Joe's Brewery, a bed for the night (make a note on the judge form if you need a place to stay) and lunch on Saturday. For those who wish to come on Friday, we plan to have a party on Friday night featuring the efforts of our local brewers. For additional information, feel free to get in contact with our illustrious leader, Joe Formanek, at 512 Dogwood Champaign IL, 61801 jformane at students.uiuc.edu (217) 351-7858 - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Second Annual Boneyard Brew-Off Entry and Recipe Form Entrant Information: Name: ______________________________________________________________ Address: ___________________________________________________________ City: ________________ State: ________________ Zip: _______________ Phone(home): ___________________ Phone(work): ______________________ Email: _____________________________________________________________ Club Affiliation: __________________________________________________ Entry Information: Name of Beer: ______________________________________________________ Category and Subcategory (number and letter): ______________________ Style Name: ________________________________________________________ Recipe Type: ( ) Malt Extract ( ) Partial mash ( ) All Grain ( ) Mead The Recipe: Gallons Brewed: _____________ Water Treatment: ____________________ Yeast: ( ) Liquid ( ) Dry Starter: ( ) Yes ( ) No Yeast Nutrients: ___________________________________________________ Carbonation (method and amount):____________________________________ Boiling Time: _____________ S.G.: ______________ F.G.: ___________ HOPS: Type Pellets or whole Amount Alpha Acid Use(boil, dry, etc) Time ______ ________________ ______ __________ ________________ _____ ______ ________________ ______ __________ ________________ _____ ______ ________________ ______ __________ ________________ _____ ______ ________________ ______ __________ ________________ _____ MALT: Type/brand Amount Steep or mash? Anyone may enter and everyone is subject to the same rules, as described here. 2. Anyone who contributes to the brewing of an entry must be listed as an entrant. The use of commercially liscenced brewing facilities is strictly forbidden. 3. All entries will be judged by standard AHA categories unless the number of entries in a particular category is insufficient to justify separate judging---in which case we reserve the right to combine categories as needed. The Entry Process: 1. Entry fees will be $5.00 for each entry. Four or more entries receive our special discount rate of $4.00 per entry. All checks should be made payable to the Boneyard Union of Zymurgical Zealots. 2. We will require two unmarked brown or green bottles (no raised lettering with a brandname on the bottle) with a bottle ID form attached with a rubber band on the outside of the bottle (glue is not acceptable). We will accept marked caps if the marking is blacked out with a black marking pen. 3. We require a complete and accurate recipe form with each entry. We reserve the right to publish the recipe in any publication, giving the entrant credit. 4. We reserve the right to disqualify any entry for incomplete paperwork or for failure to comply with any of the rules stated here, so please prepare your entries and complete bottle ID, entry, and recipe forms carefully. Disqualified entries may be judged but will not be eligible for prizes or awards and will not be returned to the entrant. All entries become the property of the Boneyard Union of Zymurgical Zealots. We must have completed recipe sheets and bottle labels for each entry. Where and When: 1. We would like to receive the entries, with completed paperwork, as soon as possible after July 6, but we will accept walk-on entries if they are presented with the appropriate completed paperwork. For planning purposes we must be notified of any walk on entries at least on week prior to the competition. 2. The entries should be shipped to Boneyard Brew-Off c/o Joe's Brewery 706 S. Fifth St. Champaign IL, 61820. 3. It is legal to ship your entries via UPS or air freight. However, you will probably be asked the contents of your package. Since the person asking might be unaware of the details of the law concerning the shipping of beer for competition purposes, a good answer is non-perishable food. Further details should not be necessary. Bottles may be delivered to the competition site with completed paperwork on July 20, if we are notified at least one week in advance. Judging: 1. Judging will be conducted on Saturday, July 20, 1996 starting at 9:00am. The winner of each category, except for the special high-gravity category will go on to be judged for best of show. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd beers in each category will be awarded ribbons. Every attempt will be made to guarantee appropriate serving conditions during judging for each beer. Categories: 1. The categories are standard AHA categories, but we reserve the right to combine the categories as needed for the purpose of having a sufficient number of entries in each category. When this is done, the beer will still be scored according to how it was categorized by the entrant---the beers with the highest numerical scores will win the combined category. ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Joseph A.
