Okay... this is gonna start up the 'ol HBD Copyright controversy again.... I can see it already. Dennis, I applaud your intentions to head this off early... it's just too bad we didn't see it all coming. Jim Koch is famous for "pushing the envelope" and I would be suprised if he didn't already overstep his bounds on this one. His beer might be palatable and one of the better choices in many bars but I still personally boycott his beer and will share my views on this if anyone asks me. (remember the "Sam Houston Beer" story?) > Because of the use of the BJCP name, steps are in the process to tm > it and the logo. I am also looking for people to serve on a > committee dealing with the ethical use of the name and logo as well > as the concerns over paying judges compensation. This is a real touchy area (as evidenced by the recent letters to the digest) and I really hope we can find a common ground. We really need to be able to prevent a company (like, oh some northeastern brewery for instance) from taking advantage of a system that was implemented for the propogation of a voluntary event. I *AM NOT* against judges from receiving a gift for their efforts... I was sent my first such gift from the Nebraska State Fair... $35.00 for travelling a few hundreds of miles, spending $$ on two nights in a hotel and judging 45+ beers. Helluva compensation huh? It's not. It was just a token and as such I don't think it should be restricted but where to draw the line? Everyone here on the JudgeNet has their opinion and God knows that we will hear it but let's try to remember that we are all on the same side here and we should hash this out like grown men and keep the mud slinging to a minimum. Maybe a 'bot' to control submission content like the one used to slow Al down on the HBD? (tongue firmly in cheek Al, it *was* funny at the time though! :) ) - -- Lee C. Better hurry before Jim (tm) Koch (tm) beats us to it and we have to be paying royalties to him to use our own name! (^8~ Honestly, isn't that bottle statement rather misleading? The entry I sent in for the contest was judged by a couple of commercial brewers not in the BJCP who had apparently never drank a rauchbier before! (at least from their comments they made) Cheers!
