With the new influx of members, do we have a handle on who is net capable or who at least can receive judgenet? What percent of the members of BJCP are already on judgenet? From the last listing of members with their email addresses, it seems we are only at 25-35% of our estimated membership of 1600. Cerainly more are net capable than this low percentage. Do the database leaders in each region have the needed information to compile a membership profile that would aide in making a better decision on how to communicate? With all the sophisticated software/engineer brewers in our group, certainly we can have a database that will allow needed information to be gathered/stored. My contention is that we have not fully developed/encouraged our members to become involved with judgenet or accessing the BJCP netsite. I honestly believe that 60-75% of our members have the capability for getting the listserve or accessing the netsite. In accordance with Al's suggestion that we use the homebrew clubs for more information distribution, I would suggest again that we may not know our members or have a grasp on what clubs these members attend. Even the AHA which should be best marketer in the beer business has no idea who the leaders in each club are. They only have a mailing address and a contact person. Often, this contact person is no longer an officer or may not even be in the club currently. If BJCP had a primary contact person in every club, we could begin to enlist our members to subscribe to judgenet or access the netsite at least monthly for updates. What I'm proposing would take lots of work, but it can be done. I'll volunteer to assist if needed. Done correctly, clubs could save $$$ when they sponsor a competition. With contact brewers in each club, it makes it easy to email to a list created, announcements of upcoming competitions, entry forms, and follow up on prize distribution. Even evaluation results could be given online with the knowledge that John Doe has an email JDoe at aol.com. Well, that's enough brainwork for this morning. Time to make a living. Larry Matthews Raleigh, NC ------------------------------ From: ddavison at execpc.com (Dennis Davison) Date: Sat, 11 May 1996 00:26:00 -0400 Subject: Longshot It looks like the beers from last years Boston Beer Companies "World Homebrew Competition" are in the stores. I had the Hazelnut Brown last night and was quite pleased. However, I was a bit dismayed with the back label on the bottle, where it states "judged by homebrewers from the Beer Judge Certification Program". Because of the use of the BJCP name, steps are in the process to tm it and the logo. I am also looking for people to serve on a committee dealing with the ethical use of the name and logo as well as the concerns over paying judges compensation.
