Lansing" Date: Thu, 9 May 1996 20:19:18 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Communications So the question has come up with how to keep in touch with non-netters? One electronic link everyone has is the telephone. For_very_ little money the Program could create a telephone site, somewhere centrally located, St. Louis perhaps where exam schedules, committee openings, and general points of interest could be accessed through a menu driven system. The first thing that the message should say would be the date of last "updating", "Press 1 for exam dates in your region" (number the regions and have that info in a sub-menu of #1)...."Press 2 for a list of BJCP competitions in the region of your choice'...Press 3 for etc. & etc. By having the phone center _geographically_ centralized keeps the far corners of the US from having to pay terribly more for long distance than most people. Calls after 11:00 pm are dirt cheap anyway. The fisrt annuoncement in the message should be an "update" date so if there is no new news people can hang up for a minimum charge incurred. If this is too pricey, how about a "900" number with the cost per minute just high enough to pay for the service itself, that may not cost the Program anything but would the people use it? If anyone out there has any experience with this sort of thing how about giving us some rough cost estimates on setting something like that in motion. before the mead takes its' final toll....
