For my money, astringency in beer has the same flavor/sensory characteristics as astringency in a fine red wine - like a good Merlot or Cabernet Sauv. I perceive it as a puckering sensation, or a bitterness near the back of the throat. I have to agree that black malt causes grain astringency. Isn't Sierra Nevada Stout evidence of this? I perceive grain bitterness in this beer. Anyone else? AHA guidelines call for grain bitterness in several beers it seeks to describe. Grain bitterness *IS* the same as tannin astringency, no? Best of Show was won by Mark Bailey of the Carlina Brewmasters for his smoked porter. Full results can be viewed on our web page at http://www.wp.com/ at your.service/cbm/brewmast.html. That is offered to the organiser as an alternative to sending in a separate judge report. I would like to suggest that it be used regardless of whether an organiser prepares a separate report. By doing so, it helps assure that the listings are updated more frequently (at least for the active judges). My experience has been that under the old regime, I would submit a judge report, with accurate addresses, only to find the same long-out-of-date addresses the next time I got a judge list for another competition. I don't say that with any intention of criticising the job that James Spence did. The judge reports were obviously used to make sure points were recorded than to update/confirm the accuracy of the database. The only reason that the addresses for Madison judges are (mostly) correct now (except for three who have moved since our last competition) is that during the interim period I sent Chuck a list of corrections to the long-outdated information. I suspect most people will not take the initiative to review the accuracy of the addresses of their clubs' judges. We can hope that individuals will do so in response to the by-laws mailing. Using the "sign-in" part of the list and sending copies of the pages with the corrections can help keep the list up-to-date, which will benefit other organisers who hope to contact the same judges. It doesn't get said often enough, so let me express my thanks to the people who are exerting the effort to keep the "new" BJCP running. The exam scheduled for May 12th in Santa Rosa has been postponed to give some of the examinees a little more time to prepare. We are probably looking at late June/early July for that one. I have also had requests to offer exams in Phoenix, Salem (OR), Albuquerque and El Paso. Yikes - they sure are keeping me busy! Please contact the individual listed with each exam for more info, or if there is no number, reply directly to me.
