With as many judging opportunities (and other beer events) as there are in the Northern Illinois/Southern Wisconsin/Eastern Iowa area, the calendar does fill up. I like to see that kind of effort at communication and cooperation. A few weekends ago, there were 3 (annual) events scheduled all for the same weekend (some moved from last year's dates)--one competition and two beerfests, and I know that attendance was down at the one I attended (8th Annual Blessing of the Bock--always the Sunday after Saint-Patrick's Day), in part because of the other events. I know that the early spring calendar simply gets crowded and it's tough to work around it, but let's work together to avoid the conflicts when possible. To do my part in that respect (and plug two events), our Tenth Annual Big and Huge competition is 11-May-96 (second weekend in May) and our Tenth Anniversary Great Taste of the Midwest craft brewers' festival is 10-August-96 (second Saturday in August--tickets go on sale 1-May, $17/$16, MHTG, P.O. Box 1365, Madison, WI 53701-1365. must include SASE with order.) >Does anyone know of a good site that contains a calendar of competitions? 1) The AHA has a calendar, which is printed in ZYMURGY and sent to clubs. It should also be available on their web page (I'm not webbed, so I can't check) or available from info at aob.org. The shortcoming of that is that they can't list it until they are informed of it, either by sanctioning or other means. 1a) With more competitions skipping AHA sanctioning in favour of going with the BJCP, the AHA is less likely to have a comprehensive listing. Is there/will there be any formal procedure in place for the BJCP to send listings of BJCP competitions to the AHA? 2) For the Chicagopolis, Andy Patrick has a BBS he calls Home Brew University, which, the last I was aware of it, has a fairly comprehensive regional calendar. I would not be surprised if he is putting that stuff on a www site someplace. I don't know if anyone has heard from him lately, but his email is andnator at wwa.com if you want to ask about HBU. Now go have a beer, Bob Paolino Madison rpaolino at earth.execpc.com You may now go back to your regularly-scheduled beer ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 Apr 96 08:17:01 EDT From: wrs at slack.org (Bill Slack) Subject: Re: WHC It took four days for my post on the WHC to get published on Judgenet. In that time, I've heard from many WHC judges and had an email exchange with Russ Wigglesworth. Here's an update: People who judged one day got 1.5 points. People who judged two days got 2.5 points except for a very few (Dan Hall, Mike Fertsch, that I know of) who had some involvement with the BOS and got 3.0 points. I heard from Russ Wigglesworth and (paraphrasing him) he says: -No one was offered three points for two days. -The applicable rules are one point for the first session, half a point for each subsequent session. -The organizers reported the event as two sessions on both days. -Therefore Russ awarded 1.5 points for one day, 2.5 for two days. Dan and Mike are probably special cases. Seems to me we _were_ told we would get three points but no one put it in writing. Many people did more than two sessions each day, especially if you consider the many second round sessions and the total number of beers judged. I told Russ I'd get peoples' opinions on this and asked him what he needed to grant the extra half point. He said he would if the number of sessions was reported incorrectly. The issue seems to be what constitutes a session? One large flight? Two small flights? One morning? One afternoon? More than 13 beers? More than 20 beers? A second round? A BOS? Let me know what you think.
