I didn't pick up from the previous posts on this topic whether it is customary in your various competitions to tell the judges what is in a 'specialty' beer before they judge it. We do this in ours but I am of the mind that we should stop this practice. I think the judges should judge the beer first, then be told the specialty ingredients, then they can readjust depending on whether they feel the ingredients contributed to the brew. It is *easy* to find something when you know it's there. Or perhaps they should never be told them. The organizers can decide the order of judging knowing the ingredients. It seems we are on the verge of a misunderstanding here. Please be aware that I suggested a "does it work?" idea for evaluation of fruit/herb/specialty beers. Not a "does it work for me?" approach! ^^^ ^^ Both Bob Paolino and Fred Hardy make excellent points about how a does it work for me approach could be much more subjective than we want. People who don't care for nutmeg could just give 24s to most of the holiday beers and be finished early ;) This is not something that I am reccomending. However, I do believe that most of us (barring extreme examples - like I find brussel sprouts so disgusting they make me gag, and I'm sure there are no circumstances under which I could fairly evaluate a brussel sprout beer) can suspend our personal preferences in the herb/spice/fruit/vegetable kingdom long enough to make a fair evaluation of a beer. Is the base beer a decent beer? Is the special ingredient noticeable? Is it in balance with the base beer? Does it make the base beer better than it would have been without the special ingradient? In short, does it work? I think I can ask these questions while tasting a beer even if it contains ingredients I am not very familiar with or fond of and still wind up with a reasonably fair evaluation as well as comments that the brewer might find useful. Temporary suspension of your personal tastes is required in these styles, just as it is in other styles. It looks like the best date for the exam is Saturday, June 8th, since the local homebrewers would have difficulty taking time off work during the week. This date also minimized conflicts with the judging and sessions, though those taking the exam should avoid excessive celebrations on Friday night. I've heard accounts of at least one person falling asleep during the BJCP exam after a long night of drinking, so don't let that happen to you! In any case, reservations for the exam should be made through me, not the AHA, though the AHA has been helpful in giving me advance notice of the conference schedule.
