He states that it was in a perfectly legal "green wine bottle." He is correct that his bottle was legal. Otherwise it would have been rejected by the organizing committee. It is legitimate for a judge to make a constructive comment about a bottle, such as fillage levels. The wrong kind of bottle is not, IMO, a legitimate constructive comment. Grading down because of the bottle is not acceptable under any circumstance. We do not review every judge sheet before we return them to the entrants. It has been suggested that we should, but I don't think it is practical. I would appreciate entrants giving me feedback on how we did. I hope Dave's entry was not graded down, and the judge simply made an inappropriate remark on the sheet. In either event, Dave, please accept my apology. The judge was, IMO, out of line. If a judge has a question about the physical appearance of an entry she/he should check with the organizer. Commenting that a skunky beer in a green bottle might score higher if it was in a brown bottle is a reasonable comment. The entry should, however, be scored down for skunkiness, not because of the type of bottle. Mead (I assume no hops) is immune, which makes the judge's comment even more out of line. BTW, allowing non-beer entries in the 1996 Capitol District Open is currently under review. It is likely that they will not be accepted this year, but the jury is still out. Bill says: >Quite frequently Judgenet becomes a bit dull. To liven up my day I >enter posts to this forum that I believe will create the most flack >and thrash. This sounds counter productive to me. If it becomes dull. either use the page down key or the unsubscribe feature. If you have a point, make it constructively. WE are not here to entertain you, but to be informative. > It is interesting how very few of you will answer a >direct question. While I have to agree, there are other ways to get what you're after, use your creativety. You get more flies with sugar than vinegar. If you don't agree with what has been set up or the way things are run I see that you have two choices, Get out or get involved. Not take cheap shots and get everyone roused and on the defensive. Instead of telling people who were ELECTED what to do, maybe offer some suggestions. It sounds like your expertise would be useful to the present situation, but unfortunatly personalities will get in the way. Seems to me with the recent lash outs, you lost alot of credibility, (at least with me, FWIW). Whether I agree with the BOD or not, they ARE volumteers and do have lives other than beer judging. After all, it's only beer. I'm sorry for the use of the bandwith but I feel better now.. He doesn't have anything constructive to add to the judging community, he's just trying to stir the pot to "liven up my day." Winter must be very boring in BF Maine ... Bill whines: >You just gave me a cheap shot. It sounds like the master of unsubstantiated cheap shot blather can dish it out but can't take it. Bill, assuming anyone reads his posts: >It is interesting how very few of you will answer a direct question. >Perhaps you don't understand the question. They're ignoring you!!!! (Like I will go back to doing after this post). A reply to your diatribes would lend them credibility. Bill drivels on: >So many of you in corporate America have become > so afraid of losing your jobs, because you job should not have been > created in the first place, that all you know how to do is CYA. What????? Who do you think you're addressing on this forum?? Are you accusing anyone in particular, or are we all supposed to feel insulted? Maybe I've been asleep out here in the Midwest, but where is *this* years winning beer ? Granted, I do not patronize Mr. Kochs product, but I do not recall seeing anything about the 1996 winners beer. Can someone refresh my memory ? Who won the 1996 World contest, and what was the style ?
