He then, however, takes issue with characterising the concern expressed a few days ago as "point chasing." Although it's quite possible (likely?) that Greg Walz didn't mean quite exactly what he wrote, he did say something to the effect that he wouldn't judge at any competition for which he wouldn't get points. "Point chasing" isn't such a bad summation _of that statement_. I responded to that one myself the other day, and _speculated_ about what Greg might have really meant, but my speculation is no substitute for his own words and thoughts. I hope he will don asbestos suit and put his 32 cents' worth back into the discussion. ***Al Korzonas talks about judging with less experienced judges:*** Thank you, Al, for your thoughtful reminder to all of us. I, too, was judging in Evanston that day and was paired with an apprentice. (Indeed, Al and I were judging different flights of the same styles.) I took some time to engage the apprentice in a discussion of the characteristics of the styles we were judging and sought to discuss the individual beers briefly to give him a chance to express his perceptions, even when our scores were close, and to encourage him to discuss his perceptions when our scores were radically different. On one occasion, he was (imho) simply wrong in a perception; the beer was what I called "Liberty-Lite"--a wonderful APA in most respects except that it was rather thin. I forgot how he (the apprentice judge) described it, but at the time I came to the conclusion that he was misperceiving the hop flavour as something else. We did discuss that one for a while, but in the end I went with my perception. Al gives me a reminder to remain aware of that sort of thing and not to be (automatically) so sure of myself. On the others, though, our discussions caused me to reassess my own initial evaluation of an entry and I adjusted my scores accordingly. ***Finally, the fun stuff: Spencer talks about the breakfast beers for the Chicago-post-NHC brewoff*** Well, Spencer, I'd already shared with others some of the names I came up with, so I might as well share them here, too: I had Cocoa Puffs Porter rather than Count Chocula, and Fruit Loops Framboise. Here are some others: Beechwood-Aged Rice Krispies American Swill, Corn Flakes Style Lager, Shredded Weizen, Cheerios Stout, Kix Malt Liquor, Honey Nut Brown Ale, well you get the idea.... I bet you folks with kids have a little more exposure to the proliferation of breakfast cereals and can come up with many more! In the spirit of good beer and cooperation, the BJCC has agreed that judges will get points this year, even if the AHA doesn't pay to have the points recorded (unlike every other sanctioned competition in North America which _does_ pay for the service). Unspoken in the agreement to record the points for free is the assumption that we get a commitment from the AHA to provide us with the appropriate paperwork to credit the participating judges. We need a commitment from the AHA to provide us with this paperwork, otherwise they should not expect people to spend their time and money to help them with _their_ competition! I have cc'ed Karen Barela with a copy of this posting and would request that she reply directly to JudgeNet acknowledging that the appropriate paperwork from the AHA Nationals will be submitted to the BJCP Administrator in a timely and efficient manner. Judging beer should be about judging beer. Until very recently I found that everyone I met who was involved in brewing to be very cooperative and friendly... as if we were all working towards the same goal. What he's said embodies that spirit, which is something I'd like to keep alive. -Jim Brennan ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Apr 1995 19:49:55 -0400 From: delbrew at pgh.nauticom.net (Nathaniel Lansing) Subject: Club incorporation We are starting the rigors of incorporating our club and are hoping to obtain "educational organization" status, 501c3, (did I get the number right?). Does anyone know of any homebrew club that has obtained this status? If anyone can help me with this it would be greatly appreciated.
