Unfortunately Jim, I don't think so. At least, not yet. The AHA broke its ties to the BJCP before there was a new plan/program ready to be offered by the AHA or the BJCP, the AHWBTA or anyone else. This is unfortunate in my opinion because of the tremendous uncertainty and anxiety it creates. The AHA may or may not have had any choice but it would have been better if they had conducted their survey of judges and proposed a new program at the time of their withdrawal from the existing BJCP. But, all that is water under the bridge. MY INTERPRETATION of what is happening is that a few groups ie. the AHA and the BJCC are working furiously behind the scenes to put together a workable proposal for a beer judging program. As with all major reorganizations, time to communicate with the rank and file competes with time to get the work done. Communication often loses out to some extent and leaves the rank and file feeling uninformed. I suggest two things: 1. Patience. 2. Volunteer to help. Call James Spence at the AHA or contact someone on the BJCC. BJCC names and addresses were noted in the digest a few issues ago. Someone help Jim out here, I don't have that issue handy. This should make you ask, "Well which group should I help?" You'll have to make up your own mind. I hope it starts to strike judges that the more we divide our efforts, the more likely as you put it that the BJCP will be circling the drain. >Is there another discussion group to join (from AHA, or anywhere) >that is like the old judgenet? I hope that Judgenet will return to "normal" but right now, it seems inevitible that the organizational chaos will preoccupy discussions. I for one am glad that the organizational discussion is taking place on the net. Jim, I don't think I'd be going too far out on a limb to say that we'd _all_ like to see a return to the good old days, but that's not reality. The AHA, for reasons of its own, has decided to create a crisis in the community, and a lot of the political-type traffic in the group recently has been from those who see a unique opportunity here to improve the situation greatly. The discussions you're seeing now are influencing decisions that will decide what beer judging's future will be. This is damned important. The "old judgenet" will return when the crisis is handled. I'm sure you're not alone in your impatience to see that day come, but we can't get there without going through this first. Give them another few weeks to get the job done. If you don't hear what you should think you should hear, let me know. BJCP STATUS: Russ Wigglesworth is in the process of sending out a letter from the BJCC indicating current status. From my stnadpoint as Co-Director, responsible for exams in the east, that status is that three judge representatives have been appointed to the BJCC and hold the balance of power. The BJCC has decided that elections should be held ASAP so that all seven members are elected and represent the judges. The BJCC has decided that the BJCP shall be a REGIONAL organization, with significant responsibility and authority with regional councils. The regions have been asked to hold elections and get their acts together. If you have questions, contact Russ or me. Steve Stroud and Gregg Smith on the JudgeNet are other good contacts, as they are BJCC members. Otherwise, the BJCP is going great guns. I am booked up on exams through June and more people than ever are showing up to take them. With good scoring help in the east, we are turning them around faster than ever. It reads, in part: "The AHA would like to see the BJCP function as an independent entity, free from control of any organization." This, if true, is welcome news to me. I don't know where the story originated, since there is no byline. Hope they know what they're talking about. The feature also states, "The BJCP will continue beer accreditation as usual. The organization would like to become a member-run entity with appointed representatives serving different ares of the U. S." Shouldn't that be "elected representatives?" Oh well, at least the word is getting out. Peter Garofalo BJCP judge ------------------------------ End of JudgeNet Digest ************************
