I am writing this open letter to the BJCC and copying it to JudgeNet in order to encourage you to establish an election system immediately, and to offer you some tools to assist in that effort. As those of you who have followed the discussions on JudgeNet are aware, I believe that the most important task before you is to implement an election process so that the membership can take control of the BJCP, and I think it is fair to say that this opinion is shared by many judges. Further, I think it is clear that the membership is willing to accept a voluntary membership fee in exchange for voting privileges. You have the power to establish elections and the means to finance them. I realize that it is tempting to engage in lofty debate and try to craft a perfect association, but there is no time for that, and that should be the province of the elected representatives. If the BJCP is to survive, it must become truly democratic immediately. It is clear from discussions on JudgeNet as well as private conversations that the membership is rapidly losing faith in the ability of the BJCC to establish a democratic and independent BJCP. Any further delay will simply further erode the image of the BJCP. Make no mistake about it, we are now in competition with the AHA. Our best competitive advantage is our reputation, and as that degrades so does our ability to compete. The recent appointments of at-large representatives is not an end, but simply the first small step in this process. It should be your highest priority to replace yourselves with elected representatives. In order to reach this goal, it is crucial the the BJCC use email to communicate effectively with itself and with the membership. If you receive this message via fax, it means that I don't know how to reach you via email. I will be glad to provide free email access to BJCC members on synchro.com, however it is probably cheaper to get a local account than to pay the long distance phone charges. If you have email access, but do not receive JudgeNet, I would like to encourage you to subscribe. JudgeNet is a daily Internet digest that reaches over 400 beer judges, over half of whom are ranked BJCP judges. Simply send me a message with your email address and indicate that you are a BJCC member who wants to subscribe to JudgeNet. I would like to encourage you to keep the membership informed via JudgeNet. In order to regain and keep the support of the membership, the BJCC must become more communicative with the membership, and JudgeNet provides a simple, inexpensive mechanism for accessing over 10% of the BJCP membership. In order to improve the efficiency of the BJCC I would like to establish a private reflected-mode mailing list for the BJCC. Basically, any mail sent to bjcc at synchro.com would be immediately broadcast to all online members of the BJCC. As a private list, it would only be sent to BJCC members. You could use the list for internal committee discussions and to provide a single address for judges to send email to all representatives. This message is actually a test of the BJCC list. Please let me know if you are interested in using this mechanism. As always, I am available to assist the BJCP become more independent and democratic with any email or computer resources at my disposal. However, don't be surprised if I am also one of your most vocal critics if you start dragging your feet. - -- Chuck Cox SynchroSystems / Riverside Garage & Brewery - Cambridge, Mass. ------------------------------ End of JudgeNet Digest ************************
