And then proceeded to outline a reasonable budget of $45k for the BJCP that includes a $25 annual membership fee. If you look at other professional organizations, it's not very difficult to figure out that we would be getting a bargain. For example, the annual dues for the American Physical Society is $80, and many engineering societies are closer to $200. For my dues, all I basically get is a free subscription to Physics Today, and reduced fees for conferences, and this doesn't sound too different from the benefits I get by joining the AHA. > Now, Folks, I have not changed my opinion. Speaking as one who has driven up to 6 hours to judge in competitions and plans vacations around brewing events, I know that there are expenses involved in being a beer judge. But as Fred mentions, most of us don't go to competitions strictly to judge, but also to socialize with new and old friends who are interested in homebrewing. These trips can usually be combined with visits to local brewpubs, regional attractions, etc. which you would pay the same amount of money to visit without the benefit of being able to garner some judging experience. There will still be those who cannot justify this expense, but since the BJCP will need money to maintain their records and update their judging points, I suggest that member judges pay $2 or $3 per competition, while nonmembers pay $5. Do these numbers sound reasonable?
