Worked fine for our dr beer session. > t-Amyl Acetate (Banana) No hint. > Potassium Metabisulfite (Sulfury) Campden tablets. > DMS 10-15ml of the liquid from a can of canned corn. > DSP Lactic Acid My homebrew supplier carries this. GW Kent distributes 88% lactic acid, if they need to order it. Check the book "Evaluating Beer" There's a chart in one of the chapters (by a Seibel guy, I think) that uses more commonly accessible "reagents". That's where I got the canned corn juice idea, for example. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Jan 1995 11:08:43 -0500 (EST) From: Fred Hardy Subject: Software used for AHA SCP event Brian Walter wondered if there were any good packages out there for managing an AHA SCP event. I can not answer that, but I can share what works for me. Sophisticated Software for AHA SCP Events.......... the 1995 Capitol District Open will be held in Washington, DC, on November 4, 1995 (start brewing,Folks). I will use the same software package that worked so well for us in 93 & 94. Last year's event drew over 160 entries, and the package worked just fine. I use it to managed the competition before, during and after the event itself. Pre-event........... - Maintain name and address data bases for sponsors, judges, prior year's entrants, Mid-Atlantic Homebrew Clubs, etc. - Preprint registration control sheets for drop-off volunteers (we prenumber the registration sheet entries with random numbers to avoid any relationship between entry time and place, and entry number). - Prepare and print entry packets for both snail mail and email. - Prepare and print mailing labels. - Prepare and print return address labels. - Prepare category and judge lists. - Prepare entrant/category/entry number cross references. - Prepare sorted master listings for stewards to pre-sort entries into categories and flights, and control listing to insure everything is judged. During the event: - Enter scores and sort to determine placings within category. - Enter and sort for pulling lists of second and third round beers for judge lists. - Sort and print masters of category 2nd & 3rd place beers for sharing among the participants. After the event: - Prepare mailing labels for judge sheets mailing to entrants. - Prepare the AHA Organizer's Report sections for judges, stewards and category winners. - Prepare Event statistical summaries. - Prepare certificates for winners. - Prepare letters confirming participation for judges & stewards. - Prepare special category mailing labels (winners, judges, stewards, sponsors, etc.) This package also works great for ad hoc lists, tables, letters, mailing labels, and so on. It even has a spell checker and on- line thesaurus. In fact, I prepared this posting using the same package. This fabulous, all around, easy to use, widely distributed software package is WordPerfect 5.1 running on an ancient 286 PC under DOS with an equally ancient HP LaserJet IIP printer. I will be happy to share forms, lists, etc. with other organizers. If interested, email is fcmbh at access.digex.net. I will mail floppy media, but not supply it, nor will I supply the WP51 software. Cheers .................fred ============================================================================== We must invent the future, else it will | happen to us and we will not like it. | [Stafford Beer, "Platform for Change"] | email: fcmbh at access.digex.net ------------------------------ Date: 25 Jan 1995 19:56:27 -0500 From: "Daniel F McConnell" Subject: Registrar Programs Subject: Registrar Programs Brian asks: >So, I am asking if anyone knows of such a database, and of course >is it available on a competition budget? PC or Unix version preferred, but >Mac will also work. And Spencer comments....... >Gee, I've never had to ask the steward about specialty ingredients. >In all (but one) of the competitions I've judged, I've been given a >list of the beers in the flight, with style and specialty ingredients >(if any) noted for each beer. Of course, this depends on the >registrar being organized :-) I have been the registrar for many of the competitions that Spencer has judged (chest puffing mode on). To do this I have created a simple FilemakerPro (Mac) data base that I use to organize, maintain and print judge forms and winners lists. It works well, especially if you bring a portable to the competition. I will gladly send a copy to you (or others). Caveat: I'm not a programmer, I don't even think like one, but this isn't rocket science either. DanMcC ------------------------------ End of JudgeNet Digest ************************
