Relying on the stewards to verbally give this info seems like a second-best approach. >From my limited experience, a better approach is to give the judges a list of all the beers to be judged, with entry number, and style/ingredient info. Sure, for the German Wheat all you probably need is Weizen, WeizenBock, and Berliner Weisse. But for the Specialty you might need more than one line for some beers. Am I missing something? I would be very interested in sources for the following: eugenol (clove) t-Amyl Acetate (Banana) Potassium Metabisulfite (Sulfury) DMS DSP Lactic Acid Thanks, Dave ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Jan 95 10:46:20 EST From: Spencer.W.Thomas at med.umich.edu Subject: Re: yet more specialty discussion Gee, I've never had to ask the steward about specialty ingredients. In all (but one) of the competitions I've judged, I've been given a list of the beers in the flight, with style and specialty ingredients (if any) noted for each beer. Of course, this depends on the registrar being organized :-) =Spencer in Ann Arbor, MI ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Jan 1995 13:07:29 -0700 (MST) From: walter at lamar.ColoState.EDU (Brian J Walter (Brewing Chemist)) Subject: Fifth Annual March Mashfest The Mash Tongues of Fort Collins Colorado Would like to announce the Fifth Annual March Mashfest A Homebrewed Beer & Mead Competion Entries will be due by March 10th, with a reduced entry fee if received by March 3rd 1995. This event will be held on Saturday, February 25th, 1995 in Downtown Boston with an Entry Deadline of Saturday, February 18th, 1995. All major beer categories will be recognized with prizes and ribbons being awarded to winners. The competition is HWBTA Sanctioned and all entries will be evaluated by BJCP Judges. Competition Packets have been mailed to all area BJCP Judges and will be available at select area Homebrew Shops which are serving as Drop-Off Locations. If you would like to receive a Competition Packet which contains Entry Forms and relevant information then please send your US Postal address to: bob at rsi.com. I have the itchy feeling that we may receive more entries than originally anticipated. If you are a BJCP Judge or want to play one on TV then your help will be much appreciated. The Competition Packet contains appropriate Judge Registration forms and information. Thanks for your support. Unfortunately, under the current financial and administrative systems, the BJCC felt it would be prohibitively expensive to hold a general election. As a result, the first 3 member representatives will soon be appointed by the BJCC to staggered terms of 1, 2 & 3 years. As these appointments expire, they will be replaced with elected representatives. Therefore, there will be an annual election for one 3-year seat, starting in about a year. Presumably by then a mechanism will have been developed that will make such elections feasible. I also have some opinions: I think the next few months are going to be critical for the BJCP as it evolves into a more democratic and independent organization. Since JudgeNet is the most significant and most independent voice for the membership, I intend to keep you informed as best I can. Since I have no official status within the BJCP, I get my information second-hand. If you are aware of important issues before the BJCC, please keep us informed. If you are a BJCP member, especially if you are a senior judge, it is your responsibility to keep abreast of these changes and to voice your considered opinion. I suspect that many of the decisions made by the BJCC in the next few months will have a long-term impact on the program, so we must remain vigilant and outspoken. If you are a BJCC/BJCP official, I hope you will seriously consider the opinions of the membership as expressed here, and I hope you will strive to keep your colleagues informed as well. - -- Chuck Cox SynchroSystems / Riverside Garage & Brewery - Cambridge, Mass. * actually it will be more of a republic than a democracy. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Jan 1995 14:49:29 -0700 (MST) From: walter at lamar.ColoState.EDU (Brian J Walter (Brewing Chemist)) Subject: Competition Software Howdy, I am organizing my first competition, coming up in March. Automation of the registrar duties is one area I think would really help the competition run smoothly. By this I mean having some sort of software/database which can keep track of entrant & entry information, print pull-sheets for each category, bottle labels, mailing labels for returning scoresheets, etc. So, I am asking if anyone knows of such a database, and of course is it available on a competition budget? PC or Unix version preferred, but Mac will also work.
