In that case, one should indeed be concerned about appearances. But for the 99% of competitions that remain, in which the prize might be a little bag of grain or some hops and a nice plaque instead of a ribbon, or simply the awe and admiration of fellow brewers ;->, I stand by what I originally said and all the appropriate precautions I mentioned. If I'm organizer of a competition and I pick up a ribbon or two, any discomfort I may experience is out of modesty in announcing my own name rather than any concern for appearances. Now, for those mega competitions with significant prizes, appearances become important. Even then, though, one way around it is to permit entries by organising staff, but stipulate no (or token) prizes if you take BOS. Bask in the honour, if you will, but give the Anchor trip to the runner-up. Just my thirty-two cents' worth.
