Since I just organized and took the exam I have my own opinions about such statements even if they are made jokingly. If you have problems with the exam and its format it is fine to express your displeasure here. But may I also suggest that each and everyone of you write a letter to the committee! The only way things are going to change is if we as participants in the program provide constructive criticism and solutions to what we percieve as problems with the exam. Why is the exam all essay? Why are there ten questions (ten commandments?) Any educators out there care to expound on how best to test soemones knowledge of brewing etc. Why are the questions all rather open ended and subjective, except the one about the program itself. % % Beers: Style % % > 14. For example rather than the question that asks to describe the lambic style and its variations our test had the question "Describe the beers of the Senne Valley" The test is not meant to be a cake walk is my impression. After all we do represent the leading edge of Beer Literacy as John Dale says. % > 22. Describe the various beer styles of Belgium origin. % % OK, how much time do I have, and how much paper do you have? Here we have a fine example of the subjective open ended question. The same goes for the Senne Valley question. I have dissertations from Leuven and could have written more than the 5 pages I did, but time is limited. I believe the point is to be fairly general and hit all the major points. Someone correct me if I am worng on this. % % > 23. What does saison mean? % % I know this is nitpicking, but are we just supposed to translate the word, % or are we supposed to describe the beer style? Another open question IMHO. Again I encourage you to write the committee. You can e-mail your response ot James Spence at the AHA and he can forward it to all the members of the committee. Isenhour" Subject: exam questions and e-study group Since the exam questions are available in ascii format, it seems natural to propose an electronic study group. If we divide the questions by the number of people interested and each person provides research info which can be discussed and refined, we'd have a pretty good study guide. I believe the emphasis should be on beerstyles, off-flavors, and the brewing process (in that order) with some questions on malts, hops & yeast as they relate to the latter. I think questions about the BJCP program are entirely superfluous. Frankly, the very last thing I would want to know as an organizer was whether the judge understand how to become a Master Judge. I would much rather know that he/she knew the difference between DMS and diacetyl (oh, yes, I know a BJCP judge who *doesn't*!). - --Jeff ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 May 94 12:03:02 -0700 From: raudins at elan2.coryphaeus.com (Glenn Raudins) Subject: Exam Questions. Re: Lutece & Stingo Mike asks what Lutece is. If they are referring to what I believe they are (vague question maybe?), it is Lutece Biere De Paris, a Biere De Garde. Asking questions about Stingo (a barley wine) is what I would consider a question to guarantee that there are no 100% on the BJCP exam. Re: Saison I have to agree with Bob Guerin when he stated that this question is more than a bit vague. Re: The whole ball of wax. I do feel their are some vague questions in the list, and I sure plenty that will cause enough controversy to keep this digest going for a while. I think the list will give people a much better idea of what kind of questions you are up against in the exam though. Thank you, Russ.
