Now, let the flames begin!! Beers: Style > 14. What is Lutece? > > 35. Describe Watneys' Stingo and indicate the style. Aren't these beers a bit obscure to have to describe? I think that if there is any such question which asks to identify/describe a commercial beer, then the beer should be well-known and available all over the US. I doubt these beers fit this criteria. Questions of the kind "Describe style X and give a commercial example." are OK. > 22. Describe the various beer styles of Belgium origin. OK, how much time do I have, and how much paper do you have? > 23. What does saison mean? I know this is nitpicking, but are we just supposed to translate the word, or are we supposed to describe the beer style? Technical > 8. What's the difference between a flavor and an aroma hop? Give three > examples of each. There's a pretty fine line between flavor and aroma hops. I like the question asking the differences between bittering and finishing hops much better. Barley > 22. Describe the smell of diacetyl. A pretty limited question, don't you think? How about "Describe how diacetyl affects a beer's aroma and flavor, and list examples of beer styles where some diacetyl is acceptable." On another note, I am even more bothered by the makeup of questions in the BJCP exam posted by Frank Dobner in JND #747. Of the ten questions, there were four related to beer styles, three related to the brewing process, one to mineral content of brewing water, one to off-flavors, and one to the BJCP program. There were no questions related to malt, hops or yeast! Clearly, there were plenty of questions in the pool to choose from. I think that all future exams should have the same numbers of questions out of various subcategories, as follows: Malt (1), Hops (1), Yeast (1), Beer Styles (2), Brewing Process (2), Flavors/Aromas (2), BJCP Program (1). Any opinions? Bob Guerin (bguerin at orincon.com) ------------------------------ End of JudgeNet Digest ************************
