This is not in line with Terry Foster's description in his book "Porter" from the BP "Classic Beer Style Series." Foster says that traditionally, porter was probably brown, not black and I don't believe that it was particularly heavy. My biggest disappointment with Foster's book was that although he described traditional Porters in great detail, none of his recipes in the back of the book attempted to match the traditional Porter style. There is enough info, I think, in the earlier parts of the book, for an experienced brewer to formulate a reasonable recipe. Although I don't recall any specifically, I'm quite certain that the book "Old British Beers and How to Brew Them" has several traditional Porter recipes in it. There have been a number of complaints posted in various digests over the years that the AHA descriptions of the Porter and Stout categories are inaccurate. Personally, I would like to have this dispute settled, have a "Traditional Porter" subcategory added to the AHA descriptions and have the other two subcategories corrected based upon a consensus opinion of their descriptions. From the description, it sounds like a brown porter, although the Zymurgy special issue on beer styles lists Boulder Porter as a robust porter. Jeff Brendle writes: > The other style is a "Brown" (porter) which I believe has more caramel or > black patent character for a sweet, full or rich flavor. OK about the caramel, but wrong about the black patent. Brown Porter should get its dark roasted flavor from chocolate malt, and should have little or none of the burnt character which black patent can produce, and which is within the style of a robust porter. Mike Keller asks in regards to the two styles: >In judging, is any distinstion made here? If not, which is the favored version? The Porter category in the AHA style guidelines contains both a robust and a brown subcategory. A porter will be judged based on the style guidelines for the subcategory that the brewer specifies on the entry form. There is no preference given to one style or the other in judging.
