THIS REALLY STEAMS ME!!!! >This included a Master and a National judge. well we had a similar discussion last year after I experienced the same kind of 10% no show with no call to cancel at the first round AHA national. The only workable solution we came up with was to plan for this level of no show. Other schemes such as refundable deposits or docking points for no shows who RSVP appeared to only create a disincentive to register in advance which works against the competition organizer. I think the AHA should try to do more in terms of an information packet for competition organizers which could alert them to such pitfalls. Surely there have been enough competitions that a survey of organizers could provide a base of conventional wisdom to serve as a starting point for other organizers. Therefore, I am technically not an objective reviewer. I will attempt to limit this preview to the basic facts, and await an unbiased review from another judge. The Beer Enthusiast's Guide by Gregg Smith 1994, Storey Communications, Pownal, VT 136 pages, paperback, 6"x9", large type $12.95 US / $17.50 CAN Contents: - Beer and the Story of Civilization - The Brewhouse and Brewing - Styles - Beer Characteristics - Brewing Ingredients - Preparing for the BJCP Exam - Appendices In a nutshell, this book is what you would get if you took my study guide and wrote a paragraph to a page about each item in the outline. While it does not provide any new information, it does include useful data from a variety of sources. For the new judge this is probably a good compilation of data for studying for the exam. For those with large beer libraries, this is a convenient way to carry a useful collection of judging & tasting info. I think this book will prove to be popular with aspiring judges. I just received my complimentary copy with a letter explaining that it had just come back from the printer. I assume it will be available to the public within a few weeks. - -- Chuck Cox SynchroSystems / Riverside Garage & Brewery - Cambridge, Mass. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Mar 94 18:35:00 PST From: "Hamburg, Steve" Subject: AHA 1st Round, Chicago Judging The Chicago regional 1st round judging for the AHA National Homebrew Competition is scheduled Friday and Saturday, May 6-7. Midwest judges should note that this is the weekend after 1st round judging in Cincin- nati. Judging will take place at Cavanaugh's Restaurant, in the landmark Monadnock Building in Chicago's Loop. Competition entries should still be delivered to Goose Island Brewing, however. Due to space conflicts at the Goose (the famed Goose Wing will be no more due to the major demolition/reconstruction at 1800 N Clybourn), we will not be able to judge there. But in spite of the site change, we'll still hold the 2nd Annual Midwest Invitational Brewoff and Dinner on Saturday night, May 7. This definitely means that we'll have a tremendous stock of superior homebrew to quaff after judging has been completed. A mailing to all regional judges will go out by the end of this week. If you're itching to get involved though, you don't have to wait until you get it. I'm hoping to learn something, though. The St. Louis Brews is having some growing pains. When I joined the club not very long ago, there were maybe 35 - 40 people at the meetings. Six or seven bottles was enough for a tasting, and controlling things wasn't too bad. Now -- well, at one meeting last fall there were about 100 people: attendance has settled down a bit into the 75 range. We need 12 bottles for a tasting, and the newcomers aren't really learning anything, especially about styles. The meetings are arugably turning into beer drinking (contrast with tasting) sessions, keeping control is difficult, etc. We have a by-law that each member is supposed to bring beer (homebrew or commercial) three times a year. If you ignore issues of style-popularity, you'll see that we should be getting 75 members X 3 beers/year/member -------------------------------- = 18 beers at each meeting 12 months/year The real number is closer to 12, plus what the brewmaster brings in, but even this is too much. We don't want to tell people "leave your beer at home" but this is quickly getting out-of-hand. There has been talk about splitting the club along a couple of axes, but nobody is thrilled with the idea. We *have* started having "beginner's clinics" 30 minutes before the general meeting starts, which addresses some problems but not others. One of the big concerns is making our members into good beer judges, whether they know it or not. Education about styles, flavor, faults, etc. is a big part of what we want to accomplish at the meetings. So, any judges out there active in large clubs? How do you do things? We need all the good ideas we can get. t ============================================================================= Tom Leith InterNet: trl at wuerl.WUstl.EDU 4434 Dewey Ave. CompuServe: 70441,3536 St. Louis, Missouri 63116 "Tho' I could not caution all 314/362-6965 - Office I still might warn a few: 314/362-6971 - Office Fax Don't lend your hand 314/481-2512 - Home + Infernal Machine to raise no flag atop no Ship of Fools" ============================================================================= ------------------------------ End of JudgeNet Digest ************************
