Anything above 4.0 is an excellent beer (and this agrees with the AHA scale), and out of literaly hundreds and hundreds of samples, about 15 have received 5.0 from me. usually these are style bearers like Shlenkerla Rauchbier, or Cantillion ***. Thanks, WAK ------------------------------ Date: 15 Mar 94 21:21:00 GMT From: fjdobner at ihlpa.att.com (Frank J Dobner +1 708 979 5124) Subject: Optimator I got a six pack of Spaten Optimator this weekend for $6.99 which I thought was kind of a good price. I also got a six of Imperial Stout for the same price (Samuel Smith). I can only assume that the retailer mispriced at least one of these. I poured the bottle of Spaten into a straight-sided Mort Subite glass from I which drink many different styles. I just happened to be sitting reading an article about DMS when I brought the glass to my lips. DMS? This beer smelled like a pot roast, complete with potatoes and onions! I will probably use that forever as my reference for DMS. My comment or question is, if I were to receive a beer like this on the exam or during a tasting would that count against it? The smell was not objectionable. I rather thought of it more of a product of some of the German styles. DMS is not mentioned in the AHA style descriptions so I guess it is not wanted. Might someone consider this a malty nose? Two of these, I believe, are called red and brown ales. I am pretty sure that the brown ales would be covered under the AHA style subcategory called Flander's Brown but where would the red ales be covered by AHA? The red ale would include Rodenbach Grand Cru I think. Thanks as always. Studying for the big test..... Frank Dobner ------------------------------ End of JudgeNet Digest ************************
