Well, I do not claim to be an Alt expert, just a fan. In most Bierstubbes you can fins some kind of Alt. This is not to be confused with Dusseldorfer Altbier. The national Alts like Kronen and DAB tend to have more chocolate character and be less bitter. They really do range quite a lot. > > On a slightly different note, I tasted it side by side with St. Stan's > amber alt, just for fun (I know, it's not authentic). In both I noticed a > very slight odor of camphor. Is this typical? > Camphor, huh? That sounds like phenol to me. I have not experienced phenol in a Dusseldorfer Alt. The gravity and fermentation temperatures would contra indicate presence of phenol. I have, however, achieved phenol character in beers that were clean for months or years in the bottle through subtle bacterial contaminations. Cheers, Rick ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Mar 1994 13:02:35 -0400 From: Ed Hitchcock Subject: oatmeal stout It seems to me that an oatmeal stout should be enterred in the catagory that fits it best. Thus, a dryer, roastier oatmeal stout would be entered as a dry stout, while a maltier, fruitier oatmeal stout would be entered as a sweet stout. In the first instance one is merely replacing some or all of the flaked barley with oats. By NOT specifying an oatmeal stout catagory, one eliminates the problem of trying to judge sweet and dry oatmeal stouts side by side. A note to the effect of "Oatmeal stouts may be entered as either sweet or dry stout, as best befits the character of the beer" or simply "Oats may be used in either sweet or dry stout" could be appended to the stout category. It's either that or have "English Oatmeal Stout" and "American Oatmeal Stout" catagories. ____________ Ed Hitchcock ech at ac.dal.ca | Oxymoron: Draft beer in bottles. | Anatomy & Neurobiology | Pleonasm: Draft beer on tap. | Dalhousie University, Halifax |___________________________________| ------------------------------ End of JudgeNet Digest ************************
