I was judging the Specialty class in the California State Homebrew Competition, put on by the San Andreas Malts. This is always a very well-run competition, and this year was no exception with the legendary Russ Wigglesworth at the helm. There was a calibration beer, scored like the rest of the flight, and for most panels it was in the style that was being judged. For us, it was a Wit. Veteran left-coast clubs prefer a 20-point scale, and the other three judges on the panel scored it in the high teens, while I gave it a ten. I didn't think it was a bad beer, but I did think it was a lousy Wit. I made one a few months back that was just as bad. In the spirited discussion that followed, the others shaved a few points off the score, but I still felt the total was too high. When the judging was done, Russ came over to our table and asked, "What did you think of that calibration beer?" When I launched into a recital of its sins, Russ laughed and said, "That was _your_beer!_" Ooof!! I'd forgotten that I gave him some ... Oh well, at least I knocked it for the same reasons, whether I knew it was mine or not. - Martin = Martin Lodahl Systems Analyst, Capacity Planning, Pacific*Bell = = malodah at pacbell.com Sacramento, CA USA 916.972.4821 = = If it's good for ancient Druids runnin' nekkid through the wuids, = = Drinkin' strange fermented fluids, it's good enough for me! I've looked in Jackson's pocket guide for help, but I'm coming up a little short, and I'm hoping for some net.help. I need brand names, and hopefully the importer's name for as many examples as I can get. If I can't come up with enough examples in Pils and Munich Helles, I may want to expand the list to include bocks in varying strengths. So names of fine examples in this space will be appreciated as well. Many thanks -- t ============================================================================= Tom Leith InterNet: trl at wuerl.WUstl.EDU 4434 Dewey Ave. CompuServe: 70441,3536 St. Louis, Missouri 63116 "Tho' I could not caution all 314/362-6965 - Office I still might warn a few: 314/362-6971 - Office Fax Don't lend your hand 314/481-2512 - Home + Infernal Machine to raise no flag atop no Ship of Fools" ============================================================================= --------------------------------------
